Music building's construction progressing on track

Students might not be able to tell from what they see when they walk by the construction site, but work on Tufts' new music building, which began last spring, is proceeding on schedule.

"We can't see much of the work that is going on, because the construction is encased in winter casing," University Vice President of Operations John Roberto said.

The new 55,000-square-foot building will contain classrooms, faculty offices, a music library, a world music room, practice rooms, major rehearsal space and a 300-seat, broadcast-quality recital hall.

The current Cohen auditorium will also undergo a complete renovation, Roberto said.

The Cohen renovations and the new music building are slated to be completed by September 2006.

The parking spaces lost as a result of the completed music building will be recouped when an underground parking structure is finished in July 2006.

The parking garage will be located between South Hall and the Baronian Field House. New basketball and tennis courts will be built atop the finished garage.

"They definitely need more parking right now, because parking on that area of campus has been a problem for me this year," senior Emily Bain said.

Additional construction is slated for the South and East sides of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

That construction comprises the second phase of a project that refurbished the masonry of the Fletcher School's exterior, installed new windows and renovated office space inside of the Cabot tower.

All of these changes are expected to be finished by December 2006.
