Emergency surgery needed for Somerville mayor
Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone spent the night at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Mar. 7, after doctors performed emergency surgery on him to stop uncontrollable bleeding.
The bleeding was caused by complications from nasal surgery the mayor had on Monday, Feb. 27, for problems resulting from a deviated septum, including sinusitis.
Curtatone's nose began to bleed at about 7 p.m. on Mar. 7, more than a week after his surgery had been successfully completed. When his nose would not stop bleeding, Curtatone went to the hospital. Doctors were also unable to stanch the bleeding, and so the surgeon who performed Curtatone's operation performed emergency surgery to stop the nosebleed.
Somerville DPW Commissioner accused of illicit activities
Somerville Department of Public Welfare (DPW) Commissioner Stan Koty was charged with ordering a city worker to solicit charitable contributions.
While investigations into the supposed crime have not yet confirmed the accusations, DPW highway superintendent Joe Voutour resigned after alleging that Koty tried to get him to solicit money from contractors in the city.
It is illegal for a public official to use his or her position to raise money in this way for charity.
Voutour publicly expressed doubt as to the credibility of the investigation into Koty's activities.
"I believe the investigation is tainted," Joe Voutour was quoted as saying in the Somerville Journal. "I don't consider any of this impartial by any means. I think it is slanted."
The Somerville Journal noted that the investigations were "preliminary," implying that the city would continue to look into the allegations against Koty.
Two types of dough stolen from Dunkin' Donuts
A burglar broke into the Dunkin' Donuts in Somerville's Assembly Square in late February and stole a significant amount of doughnut dough, along with $1,200 from the store.
At 2:55 a.m., a white man pried open the store's back door and looted the store. The Somerville Police Department sent an officer over in response to the burglar alarm, but the thief was already gone by the time the policeman got there.
The man was caught on the store's security camera but has not been apprehended.
