Committee meets to select new Elections Board members

Five members of the Tufts student body were selected last Sunday night to serve on the 2006-2007 Tufts Community Union Elections Board (ELBO).

The incoming group consists of freshmen Nick Horelik, Adam Weldai, Jacob Maccoby and Anjali Nirmalan, a contributor to the Tufts Daily. Junior Denise Wiseman will also join them.

All are new to ELBO except for Wiseman, who served as the ELBO Chairperson during this past February 2005-February 2006 term.

A joint committee representing the TCU Senate, TCU Judiciary, and Committee on Student Life (CSL), composed of TCUJ Chairman Alex Clark, CSL Student Chair Jordana Starr, and Senate Historian Ed Kalafarski, met to review applications and to select the new members.

The committee deliberated over 12 applications for the ELBO positions, which included information about personal commitments, time management practices and motivations to be members of the Elections board.

The committee then selected the five strongest applicants for ELBO.

According to Clark, the committee was pleased with the enthusiasm and content of the applications.

The amount of applications is an impressive increase from last year, when ELBO could only fill four of its five open seats due to the lack of interest.

"In the past years, it's always been difficult to find strong numbers [to fill ELBO]," former TCUJ Vice-Chair Jake Resnicow said in February 2005.

ELBO's responsibilities include presiding over general elections for the TCU Judiciary, TCU Senate, and the CSL, as well as running the TCU Senate executive elections and any subsequent referendums that may follow.

According to Clark, duties include running candidates' meetings, collecting petitions and submitting election advertisements to campus media.

ELBO also coordinates elections with the Tufts Computing and Communications Services (TCCS) department for improved accessibility.

The new ELBO members are prepared to begin their work immediately, as the first TCU election will take place on April 5.

ELBO also plans to hold in-house elections promptly to elect a chairperson.
