iPod thefts characterize latest string of car break-ins
Tufts' blitz of car-related crimes continued last week with at least three more incidents.
On Mar. 5, the owner of a Honda Civic reported that the passenger window of the car, which was parked in the Carmichael Lot, had been smashed in sometime between 9 p.m. on Mar. 4 and 11:30 a.m. the following day. An iPod was stolen from the vehicle.
At the same location, the passenger window of a 2005 Saturn was smashed between 7 p.m. on Mar. 4 and 9:30 p.m. on Mar. 5. An iPod radio adapter was also stolen from this car.
The third incident took place in the Hillel parking lot between 3:17 and 3:35 a.m. on Mar. 5 and was witnessed by a student. The student was studying in Miller Hall when she heard glass break, looked out the window, and saw someone breaking into a car.
She described the man that she saw as between 5'7" and 6'0", of medium build, and wearing khaki pants and a long, black, puffy coat.
She notified the Tufts University Police Department (TUPD), but "[the suspect] ran down the hill toward Capen Street extension," TUPD Sergeant Robert McCarthy said. The police searched the area but did not apprehend the suspect.
The car broken into was a Mercedes SUV, and an iPod and iPod charger were missing.
TUPD is continuing its attempts to put a stop to the rash of car break-ins. "We are in contact with other agencies," McCarthy said. "We are working on it."
Flag thieves descend on EPIIC house
Eight flags were stolen from the front of the Institute for Global Leadership building at 96 Packard Avenue early on the morning of Mar. 5.
A staff member inside the building at the time reported to TUPD that "two males had climbed up to the porch on top" to steal the flags, according to McCarthy.
The incident occurred some time between 1:58 and 2:05 a.m. Police searched the area but did not find the perpetrators.
iPod thief disrupts gym workout
An iPod was stolen from the fitness center in Cousens Gym on Mar. 8.
The owner of the iPod was working out in the fitness center around 5 p.m. She placed her iPod on a workout bench about five feet away from her, looking away for a brief time. When she turned around again, the iPod was gone.
She was uncertain of who took the device. "At 5:00, it's pretty crowded down there," McCarthy said.
