Letter to the Editor | Robinson has 'Jumbo-sized' ambitions

This letter is written in response to the News article "TCU presidential candidates finalized" (Apr. 10, 2006).

It is a blossoming time. While flowers may be blooming, I am talking about Tufts' potential, especially through the leadership of Mitch Robinson as Tufts Community Union (TCU) President.

We are all fellow Jumbos, and indeed Mitch Robinson is a candidate whose ideas are Jumbo-sized, demanding more from Tufts in order for us to get the best college experience.

We need a TCU president who won't back down from convictions and is truly one of the students, not one above the students.

Mitch will alleviate the uphill battle students face not with trekking up the hill, but with the costs that plague them.

During the last few administrations, the surplus from the Student Activities Fee has ballooned to around $200,000. Mitch Robinson realizes that this surplus is excessive and that it must be used to directly improve students' lives as opposed to collecting dust.

He will implement the newly-authorized Campus Improvement Fund, which is funded by excess surplus, and use it to improve campus infrastructure (such as wireless coverage) and to train leaders of new student groups.

While books are an essential for a top-tier school like Tufts, top prices at the book store aren't.

The price for everyday items at Tufts, from photocopies to textbooks, is out of control.

Mitch Robinson is unafraid to make it clear to administrators that $0.10 per page is unacceptable, and he has no qualms about ending Barnes & Nobles' virtual monopoly on our textbook purchases by releasing book lists in advance.

Mitch is more than a cost cutter; he is a breath of fresh air, one that will keep Tufts vibrant and exciting, all the while clearing any obstructions that hinder our experience on the Hill.

Truly yours,Mose BerkowitzFreshman
