Two nights, two larcenies, two unlocked rooms, two parties

Two similar larcenies occurred in the course of two nights, both from rooms left unlocked while parties were going on in the building.

The first, reported at 1:50 a.m. on Apr. 8, took place in Hillsides Apartments.

An Apple computer, two iPods and $50 were stolen from a student's room, which were "left unlocked during the party," said Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) Sergeant Robert McConaghy.

The student told TUPD that "there were a few uninvited guests in the apartment," McConaghy said.

The victim was unable to give a description of these uninvited guests, however, and the incident is still under investigation.

The following night, a student living in Anthony House reported a similar larceny that took place some time between 1:15 and 2:30 a.m. on Apr. 9. "Some unknown person entered his unlocked room and took his computer," McConaghy said.

Residents in Anthony House were having a registered party, so many people came to the house that night.

"If you're having a registered party and you're having unknown strangers in your house, it might be a good idea to lock your door before going to the party," McConaghy said.

Student wants "Stop" and "No Left Turn" signs for his room

On Apr. 8 at 2:33 a.m., a TUPD officer returning to his cruiser parked on North Hill Road by Hillsides Apartments heard a banging sound coming from the direction of Lane Hall.

When the officer went to explore the noise, he found a person standing behind the "Stop" and "No Left Turn" signs. "He was trying to steal the signs," McConaghy said.

The perpetrator stopped what he was doing and hid his hands behind his back when he saw the policeman approaching.

The officer confiscated his tools - a hammer, a scissors, and a pair of pliers - and the student admitted he had been drinking that night.

A report of the incident was forwarded to the Dean of Students Office.

Partiers try to duck out of noise complaint

TUPD received a noise complaint on Apr. 8 at 11:34 p.m. in response to a loud party on Sunset Road. "The music could be heard from a distance, and the occupants could be heard from a distance," McConaghy said.

When the people in the house observed the approaching TUPD officers, someone in the house shouted, "Everybody, drop your cups!"

The guests were uncooperative and "slow about finding the resident of the house," according to McConaghy.

The officers attempted to clear the house, and the partiers were slow in leaving as well. The resident, whom the police were eventually able to locate, was notified that a report would be sent to the Dean of Students Office.

Piggybackers gone bad

At 11:30 p.m. on Apr. 7, TUPD received a report of an unwanted person in Bush Hall.

Four white males attempted to follow a resident into the dormitory, and when she would not let them in, they became rude to her.

"Our officers found the four males, and one was later identified as a Tufts student," McConaghy said. "The others were guests of the student."

The student was trying to find his girlfriend, who lives in Bush Hall.
