After a season of record-breakers last year, senior Catherine Beck is wasting no time in 2006-2007.
Beck turned in a time of 18:06 on Saturday, breaking the course record, as the women's cross country team took home the title at this weekend's Conn. College Invitational. Caroline Cretti, a 2006 graduate of Williams and former 5k and 10k national champion, held the previous record with her 18:23 run at the 2003 Invitational. In Saturday's meet, however, two runners-Beck and Sacred Heart sophomore Kathleen Henry-shattered Cretti's mark, and Beck's time of 18:06 will go down in the Conn. College record books.
For Beck, it was a solid start to her 2006 season, coming on the heels of a stellar 2005 effort. After leading the way for the Jumbo runners in eight out of nine races last season, the season-opener this time around was more of the same.
Beck was one of five Jumbos placing in the top 20 in Saturday's meet. Fellow junior Katy O'Brien finished fifth, and seniors Racquel Morgan (15th) and Samantha Moland (18th), and sophomore Evelyn Sharkey (16th) also placed for the Tufts squad. See Wednesday's Daily for further coverage.
