The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate will hold a student and community barbecue today at Fletcher Field from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The event will include a softball game and barbecue with some of "your favorite senators on the grill," TCU President Mitch Robinson said.
Students (mainly off-campus residents), community members, elected officials, and administrators will attend, Robinson said. Dean of Undergraduate Education James Glaser and Dean of Student Affairs Bruce Reitman are among administrators who have confirmed they will attend the event.
Robinson hopes the barbecue will help off-campus students feel more connected to campus life and help interactions with their non-Tufts neighbors.
"The emphasis is placed on off-campus students because they have the most direct contact with members of the community," said Robinson.
He said that events like this stem from past students' interest in "getting to know their neighbors."
He hopes that they will "start a dialogue that will continue throughout the year where students feel free to talk to community members."
"It's important that both sides understand where each one is coming from," Robinson said. "We need to have a student body that is respectful and mindful of the surrounding community."
