Here's to the Tufts backfield-senior tri-captains Annie Ross and Jen Fratto, and juniors Annie Benedict, Joelle Emery, and Jessie Wagner
They say that offense gets the glory, but defense wins championships. The adage couldn't be more true for the women's soccer team, which is riding a four-game win streak on the backs of their goalie and flat-back four set.
Saturday's 2-1 win over Bowdoin saw a breakdown in defense in the first half, as the Polar Bears' senior tri-captain Ivy Blackmore found the far corner of the goal only 5:15 into the first half. After that, though, the Jumbos backfield closed the door on Bowdoin. Senior tri-captain Annie Ross collected three saves as the Jumbos came back to win the game with goals from juniors Lauren Fedore and Rebecca Abbott.
Ross and the back four have allowed just two goals over the team's four-game win streak, with Ross picking up shutouts in home wins over Babson and Bates. On the season, the Jumbos, who have also used Abbott and junior Julia Brown on defense, have allowed just seven goals, tying Middlebury and Colby for the best defense in the league.
The wins have helped the Jumbos climb out of an 0-2-1 hole and the Jumbos now sit poised to contend for another NESCAC title. But the return to the NESCAC title will have to start with today's game against Wesleyan, as the defense will look to join Amherst and Williams at the top of the NESCAC standings.
