"Stay Away" from fighting on P-Row

Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) officers responded to a report at 1:53 a.m. on Oct. 13 of a student being assaulted by another student. The two individuals have been involved in an ongoing feud, said Sergeant Robert McCarthy of the TUPD.

On Friday night, one of the students punched the other several times after they met by chance on Professors' Row. The student who was struck went to the hospital for stitches.

Both students were issued Campus "Stay Away" Orders. According to McCarthy, this means the individuals are to stay away from each other, and if they fail to do so, the Dean of Student Affairs will have to intervene.

McCarthy also said that the student who was punched has the option of going to court and filing a complaint. He does not know if the student had chosen to do so.

"It's up to him," he said.

An Open container violation

An officer stopped a vehicle as it turned from Curtus St. onto Chetwynd Rd. at 11:54 p.m. on Oct. 13.

The officer originally stopped the car because one of the headlights was burnt out and there was a cord dragging on the street out of the side door.

When the officer went to the car, they found five people inside. The driver had not been drinking at all, but the other four individuals were all intoxicated Two of the occupants had opening containers and were drinking beer. The officer gave them a citation for possessing an open container in a motor vehicle.

A Cab ride gets costly

The police received a call to assist officers of the Somerville Police Department (SPD) with an intoxicated female on Upland Rd. at 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 14. When TUPD officers arrived at the scene, they found SPD officers trying to reason with the student on the second floor of the building in which she lives.

The student took a cab to her house that night and had left the vehicle and entered her house without paying the cab driver. The cab driver then called SPD.

When the police arrived on the scene, the officers tried to reason with the student, but she still refused to pay her fare. The officers gave her the option of paying for the cab ride or being arrested. The female would still not pay, so Somerville police officers placed her under arrest.

"It's cheaper to pay the fare," McCarthy said.

An identity crisis?

An officer spotted a student with an open can of beer on Packard Ave at 2:50 a.m. on Oct 14. The officer stopped the student, attempted to question him and then asked for identification. The student initially resisted.

Eventually, the student turned over identification. When he did, however, the officer saw that he was carrying two different California licenses. The birth date on one of the licenses suggested that he was 21, which he was not.

The case was turned over to the Dean of Student Affairs Office.
