Police responded to a call from Cousens Gym at 6:40 a.m. on Sept. 23.
"A student reported a female suspect was going through her gym bag," said Sergeant Douglas Mazzola of the Tufts University Police Department (TUPD).
The student confronted the suspect and "was able to pull away her keys and clothes," Mazzola said.
The suspect, a Somerville resident, then fled the scene.
The student described the woman as a white female with bleached blond hair in a pony tail wearing white sneakers, blue jeans, and a red shirt.
She was estimated to be about 5 feet, 4 inches tall and about 22 years old, according to TUPD Captain Mark Keith.
Officer Morales and Sergeant McCarthy arrived at the scene and "spotted an individual that matched the suspect in the [Cousens Gym] parking lot," Mazzola said.
The student came to the scene and identified her positively.
When the officers did a background check, they found that there was a default warrant on the woman, said Mazzola.
The default warrant signified that "she had a court date and didn't show up," Keith said. She was placed under arrest and taken into custody based on the warrant.
Mazzola said that the woman also was found in possession of Class E drugs, which include lighter dose prescriptions and narcotics.
In this case, she probably had prescription medications that did not belong to her, Keith said.
Based on the trespassing, the possession of class E drugs, and the default warrant, the suspect was sent to the Medford Police Department.
The police do not know how the individual entered the gym.
