The Tufts Inter-Greek Council (IGC) teamed up with new Boston Ave. restaurant, Boloco to raise money for Jumpstart at an all-you-can-eat event yesterday.
Students waited on a line that stretched out the door and down the block for their unlimited burritos and drinks for a $5 cover charge.
"Boloco is making no money from this at all," junior Asha Clark, Chair of Recruitment for Sororities, said. "It was really great of them to offer us up this option."
The IGC raised a total of $1,675, according to IGC social chair Sarah Ladd.
Boloco, located at 340 Boston Ave., will officially open for business today at 11 a.m.
Clark said Boloco contacted Ladd about opening the restaurant a day early for an all-you-can-eat charity fundraiser.
"He left it up to us what to do with the proceeds, so we decided to raise money for Jumpstart," Clark said.
Rob Starck, a local store marketing manager for Boloco, said that this was one of two fundraisers Boloco hosted. "We raised over $1300 on Saturday for a community soccer league," he said.
Starck said that the league, the Medford Field of Dreams, has been trying to raise $2 million over the past few months to revitalize the playing fields behind Medford High School and create a multi-use athletic field to benefit the Medford community.
Starck said Boloco would definitely consider hosting events like this in the future. "We're always open to having student groups meet here, and if they want to do fundraisers, we'll be happy to talk to them," he said.
Sal Airo-Farulla, manager of the local store, was very pleased with the success of the event. As a local Medford resident, he said that he was excited about the connections the new Boloco restaurant is making with the community.
"We'll do events like this from time to time," he said. He said that a good relationship with Tufts students is crucial to the business' success.
"If we don't have the students, we have nobody," he said.
Students were excited about the event. "I went and got all my friends and brought them back," junior Julie Hanlon, who was waiting on the line for the second time, said. She said that the board of the 3P's enjoyed lunch at the event.
The event lasted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Boloco will be hosting a third opening event, on Nov. 30, with free burritos from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
