Fall NESCAC teams compete in NCAAs

Volleyball: Amherst's automatic bid earned them a trip to NCAA Regionals at MIT. The Lord Jeffs defeated Emmanuel College easily in the first round, (30-9, 30-10, 30-17) before falling to MIT in the semifinals 3-1 (27-20, 22-30, 30-25, 27-30),

Men's Soccer: NESCAC teams recieved four bids to NCAAs, but only Williams remains. The NESCAC champion Ephs had a bye in the first round and advanced to the Round of 16 with a decisive 4-0 win over Keene St. on Saturday.

Middlebury was the first to go, bowing out in the first round after a 2-1 loss to St. Lawrence. Amherst, ranked 16th nationally in the latest poll, advanced out of the first round after defeating Westfield St., 3-1, but fell to unranked Western New England, 1-0 on Sunday.

Wesleyan also hit a wall in the second round after an easy first-round win. After steamrolling Baruch 5-0, the Cardinals were eliminated with a 1-0 loss to Montclair State on Sunday.

Women's Soccer: NESCAC women's soccer teams sent two teams to the Sweet 16. Amherst, which received an at-large bid from the NCAA selection committee, completed a stellar weekend, shutting out both Kean (N.J.) and Wheaton. In the regional opener against Kean, the Lord Jeffs notched a 2-0 win before silencing Wheaton, 3-0.

Things were more exciting for NESCAC champion Middlebury which defeated Scranton, 4-3, in overtime and Western Conn., 3-2, to earn a spot in the Sweet 16.

Field Hockey: Williams rebounded well from a late-season slip, and got its fifth straight Tournament win with a 4-1 win over Maine-Farmington. But the Ephs' season ended with a 3-2 overtime loss to Messiah.

The most surprising loss came on Saturday, as Middlebury, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, fell 2-1 to No. 9 William Smith.

Home-field advantage was kind to Bowdoin which cruised through its first two games at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears thumped Wellesley, 5-2, in the second round of play, and redeemed Middlebury's loss with a 3-1 win over William Smith yesterday to earn a regional semifinal berth next weekend.
