Following yesterday's news item about ESPN coverage on-campus, University Information Technology (UIT) contacted the Daily about future plans for more consistent ESPN service but also noted an inaccuracy in the coverage.
The Daily reported yesterday that students cannot watch ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN News in many of the places where the channels were installed since the necessary missing remote controls.
Due to an editing error, the Daily incorrectly stated that Haskell and Houston Halls were scheduled for ESPN cable installations in September.
These locations have not requested installation.
Yet University Information Technology (UIT) told the Daily today in an e-mail that it plans to replace and install anti-theft cables on missing ESPN remote controls in many of the dorm lounges on campus.
"When ESPN was installed in Miller, Stratton, Bush, Hodgdon, Carmichael, Lewis and South, a remote control and instructions on the use of ESPN were included," Irish said.
According to Information Technology Training Manager Dawn Irish, the division will also re-post instructions explaining the controls and providing RA's with extra guides.
If the remotes and instructions are present, students can currently watch the three ESPN channels in Miller, Stratton, Bush, Hodgdon and South Halls.
"[Sophia] Gordon Hall was also on the list for fall ESPN distribution. It has a complex projection-style TV that has made installing the cable difficult and potentially very expensive. UIT staff has been working on finding a cost-effective solution so that students in [Sophia Gordon] can enjoy ESPN as well," Irish said.
Students have requested ESPN in West and Wren halls, but those dorms lack television sets in their respective lounges.
ESPN has been installed in both Carmichael and Lewis Halls, but the television sets in both of those dorms are broken.
