Four new trustees were elected last month by the current Board of Trustees.
According to Linda Dixon, Secretary of the Trustees, they are elected to a five-year term and may be re-elected once to another term.
Dixon explained that Tufts trustees serve longer than others: those of other schools, where three or four year terms are more common.
"The Tufts trustees are terribly committed," she said.
Slated to begin attending Board meetings in February, the four new trustees come from varied professional backgrounds but all share a connection to Tufts, according to the Office of the Trustees.
Andrew Safran (A '76; F' 77) is the managing director for Citigroup Global Marketing.
"I had a great time at Tufts," he told the Daily.
Attending Tufts helped him to realize his dream of working abroad. Upon graduation, Safran served in Bujumbura, Burundi, with the U.S. State Department.
Before he started at Citigroup, Safran was co-head of North American Energy and served a 10-year stint at brokerage firm Salomon Smith Barney.
He is also a member of the Boards of Botanical Gardens of New York and Outward Bound USA. He also has served on the Board of Overseers of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy since 2002.
"I hope to learn more about the university and to be helpful in whatever way I can," he said.
Safran also served as a vice president in National Resources for Lehman Brothers before making his switch to Citigroup. Today he is responsible for managing Citigroup's business with all energy, utility and chemical clients.
Ellen Kullman (E '78) is group vice president of DuPont Safety & Protection, a $3.6 billion business enterprise aimed at becoming the global market leader in providing solutions in the areas of safety, security, and protection.
DuPont Safety & Protection is one of five growth platforms of the DuPont Company, where Kullman began her career in 1988 as marketing manager in the medical imaging business.
She held a variety of positions early in her career, including business director for an x-ray film business, global business director of electronic imaging at Printing & Publishing, and three administrative positions at White Pigment & Mineral Products.
She assumed leadership of the two high growth businesses DuPont Safety Resources and Bio-Based Materials in 1998 and 1999, respectively. After holding two additional administrative positions in 2000 and 2001, she assumed leadership of DuPont Safety & Protection in 2002.
Kullman received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts and an MBA from University. She worked for General Electric in various business development, marketing and sales positions before joining DuPont. She is a member of the Board of Overseers for the School of Engineering and a Tufts Alumni Admissions volunteer.
The third new trustee, Andrew Liveris, President and CEO of Dow Chemical, has spent most of his professional career in Asia. Prior to becoming President and CEO he served as head of the company's operations in Thailand and then headed up all operations out of Asia.
Liveris said that he is looking forward to learning about programs at Tufts that make it a forward-looking institution, but particularly the ones that relate to the corporate and global interface in an email to The Daily.
"I hope to contribute, given my role as a global businessman," he said.
Hailing from Australia, he started his career at Dow after graduating from the University of Queensland. He received his degree in chemical engineering and he is now a chartered engineer and a fellow at the Institute of Chemical Engineers. Currently he is officer of the American Chemistry Council.
Liveris has been a member of Dow's Board of Directors since 2004. He also serves on the U.S.-China Business Council and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Currently he resides in Midland, Mich.
Liveris called Tufts "a wonderful learning environment" and said he was honored to serve the university and President Larry Bacow.
Jeffery Kindler (A '77) is Pfizer's Chief Executive Officer and a member of its Board of Directors. He previously served as Pfizer's Vice Chairman in 2005 and as executive vice president in 2004. He joined the company in 2002 as a senior vice president.
Prior to working at Pfizer, Kindler served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Boston Market Corporation, owned by McDonald's. He also worked in various executive positions at McDonald's from 1996 to 2001.
Kindler also served as Vice President for the General Electric Company and was a partner at the law firm Williams & Connolly. He served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. and to Judge David L. Bazelon of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Kindler earned a B.A. degree summa cum laude from Tufts in 1977 and a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1980, where he also served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
He currently serves as a board member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Manhattan Theatre Club, the New York Philharmonic and the Partnership for New York City, among others. He is married and has two children.
