Athletes of the Week

Sarah Crispin, Track and Field

The Jumbo women have turned in successful weekend after successful weekend posting the quickest times in New England, the Div. III world, and Tufts history. Sarah Crispin added her own chapter to the book this weekend, breaking personal records in the mile, qualifying for NCAAs, and running the fastest split in the 4x400 Medley Relay at the Valentine Invitational held at Boston University on Saturday.

Crispin finished in 11th place in the mile run with a time of 4:57.34, breaking her own personal record. She finished higher than any other NESCAC runner and qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships held at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana from March 9-10.

In addition to her mile run, Crispin's split in the 4x400 Medley Relay, recorded just two hours after the mile, helped her relay team finish 10th out of 30 teams, with a time of 3:59.

Crispin and the rest of the Jumbo women now have their eyes set on the New England Div. III Championships, held this coming weekend at Southern Maine. After this, the Jumbos will hope to finish at the top of the Open New England Championships Feb. 23-24 at Boston University, and the ECAC Championships at Wesleyan in early March.

Ross Gimbel, Hockey

Junior Ross Gimbel turned in two stellar performances for the Jumbos this past weekend as they concluded their home schedule with a split, clobbering Salem State 7-1 on Friday night and falling to Southern Maine 8-4 on Saturday afternoon. Gimbel tallied five goals and one assist in two games, bringing him to the top of the scoring list with 24 points on the season.

On Saturday, Gimbel turned in a hat trick in a tough 8-4 loss. He started his scoring barrage just over a minute into play on a goal assisted by junior forward Greg O'Connell. Trailing late in the game, Gimbel tallied two goals in the third period to bring to 6-4.

In addition to Saturday's performance, Gimbel helped the Jumbos to a 7-1 thrashing of visiting Salem State on Friday night. Gimbel scored on a power play goal early in the first period to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead. Not long after his first, Gimbel brought the score to 3-0 with his second goal of the day. Gimbel also added an assist to finish with two goals and one assist against the losing Vikings.

Gimbel will have two chances this week to add to his point total as the Jumbos will travel to Babson on Friday and UMass Boston on Saturday to complete their season.
