Dan Rather to headline second annual Murrow Symposium

The communications and media studies office announced to the Daily that former "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather will headline the second annual Edward R. Murrow Symposium in April.

Also speaking will be Kimberly Abbott, a media adviser for the International Crisis Group; Dave Marash, a Washington-based anchor for Al Jazeera English; the Boston Globe's Charles Sennott; and Commander Joseph "Cappy" Surette, APR, a public affairs officer for the U.S. European Command (EUCOM)/Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Liaison Office.

"I'm very excited about the panel," Director of the Communications and Media Studies Program Julie Dobrow said in an e-mail. "We have both print and broadcast reporters with impeccable credentials, and folks who have a range of different kinds of experiences in journalism."

According to Dobrow, this year's panel will focus on press coverage of conflicts. "I think we are going to have an exciting and dynamic event that will help to shed light on the ways in which wars and other conflicts are - and are not - covered by the press," she said.

In its inaugural event last year, the symposium featured former "Nightline" anchor Ted Koppel. Tufts alum and former president of NBC News Neal Shapiro (LA '80) was also among the panelists.

"In comparative terms, last year was the first time we convened a Murrow Symposium, and we had another stellar panel of journalistic all-stars," Dobrow said. "What's very exciting is that we can attract this kind of talent to Tufts, and that we are starting to develop a reputation for putting on events of this caliber."

The symposium will take place on Monday April 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the ASEAN Auditorium.
