Last year, I published an article about the colonial history of Greenland, exploring why it and its Indigenous people would want to be independent from Denmark. Since then, the people of Greenland voted Demokraatit, a center-right, moderately independent party, into power. At the same time, President Donald Trump has intensified his effort to buy Greenland from Denmark, Greenland’s former colonial owner. Greenland has achieved autonomy from Denmark, but is not fully independent. Trump had made it clear that he would consider violence as a tactic to annex Greenland, but walked back such statements earlier this month.

In 2022, economists led by Raj Chetty published a paper in which they analyzed something called “economic interconnectedness,” the number of friendships across class lines. They found clear socioeconomic stratification, with people of high socioeconomic status having a higher share of friends who were high-income than people of low socioeconomic status. This is problematic because they also found that forming friendships across class lines is strongly correlated with increased upward mobility.

Oscar-winning Polish director and convicted sex offender Roman Polanski can be said to have redefined the way ‘evilness’ was depicted on screen in the 1960s through his masterpiece “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968). Unfortunately, just nine years later, he redefined the same evil himself by committing statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl.

As I write this article, the Winter Olympics in Italy are in full swing. Perhaps the two most prominent names from Team USA are Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn. If you have any knowledge of either of these athletes, you may know that luck has not been on their side when it comes to the current Olympics. Widely considered the GOAT athletes in ski racing, it would be expected for them to place very well in these prestigious games. GOAT swimmer Michael Phelps has a total of 28 Olympic medals. GOAT gymnast Simone Biles has 11 Olympic medals. Shiffrin and Vonn each have three Olympic medals, relatively few compared to their respective peers.

As midterms approach, many Tufts students are scrambling to memorize terms for a biology test or agonizing over lengthy papers. What many students may not consider is that Tufts professors are also approaching one of the busiest periods of the semester. With over 9,700 faculty publications from 2022–24, one may wonder how these professors can work around the clock to not only grade assignments, ensure course quality and hold office hours, but also reserve time for their role within their chosen field. In other words: How do professors balance creative and research work alongside their teaching duties?

Like many other kids, I was obsessed with “Harry Potter” growing up. I never enjoyed reading back then; it always felt like a chore. That is until my friend recommended the “Harry Potter” series to me. Unfortunately, I started the series with the last book because of her recommendation (Potterheads, please forgive me), but regardless, I fell right down the rabbit hole. It became an integral part of my identity growing up and introduced me to the world of fantasy and literature, becoming a major influence in my writing journey. This is why, when all the news about J.K. Rowling and her transphobic beliefs came out, I fell into a moral dilemma. I began questioning this person whom I idolized throughout my childhood, as well as my relationship with the franchise entirely.

This past weekend, Los Angeles hosted the NBA’s annual All-Star weekend at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood. Sunday’s All-Star Game marked the league’s 75th edition of the event, but in recent years, the NBA has strayed from the traditional format fans once knew. While the league has made efforts to make the game — and the weekend as a whole — more entertaining, those changes may have pushed it further away from success, convoluting an event that was once very clear.

When touring Tufts, prospective students often hear that the university is home to over 300 student organizations and that students are welcome to create their own if they do not see their interests represented. Last semester, several student groups did exactly that. From circus performance to origami to biotechnology, a new wave of student organizations is making its official debut this semester.

In the bleak midwinter, it can be tricky to maintain one’s sanity and whimsy. As temperatures stay near freezing and snow still coats much of campus, staying indoors feels compulsory rather than cozy. Yet, settling down with a good book is my way of turning a night stuck inside into a lovely evening.
