Economics of Baseball | ERA can be misleading statistic when measuring a pitcher's skill

If baseball fans were asked to pick a single stat that best represents a pitcher's performance, most would answer with earned run average (ERA), which tells how many earned runs a pitcher gives up per nine innings. The problem with using ERA to measure performance is that it is not a great indicator of a pitcher's skill. Skills are consistent abilities that a pitcher has year in and year out.

Tufts Financial Group Corner | So you're finally graduating

For my fellow seniors, now is a time of joy and dismay. On one hand, we are enjoying our last year in college and the relaxation that three previous years of hard work have earned us. On the other hand, we are faced with the realization that after graduation we are being thrust into the real world. While many of us are welcoming this change and the independence that comes with it, it is inevitable that some of us will fall victim to one of the biggest problems facing recent college grads: the mismanagement of personal finances.

Concert Review | Beethoven program is bright and bountiful at Symphony Hall

Ludwig van Beethoven graces Symphony Hall in myriad ways this season. This month conductor and music director James Levine leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in an all-Beethoven program as part of the BSO's combined Beethoven-Schoenberg programming initiative.

In Depth | With Martin Sherwin

The international standoff over Iran's civilian nuclear program follows months of futile talks led by Britain, Germany and France to limit Iran's nuclear capabilities. The International Atomic Energy Agency voted last week to refer Iran to the Security Council and accused the state of violating the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. The United States and Russia have both intervened in the diplomatic negotiation process, but members of the Bush administration reiterated that they have not ruled out military intervention in the face of a nuclear threat.
