Tufts would only benefit from an Asian American curriculum

Once again, Tufts has shown its lack of commitment to diversifying the curriculum. Last spring, a joint proposal between the history department and American studies program was submitted to the deans. However, after much waiting, this position was denied, the answer given shortly before school started without any explanation to the departments about the decision taken. The position, for a tenured-tracked Asian American historian specializing in immigration, was a collaborative effort between the department and program as a means of integrating Asian American history - one that is often marginalized and held invisible - into Tufts' curriculum. As a joint position, this proposal would help to meet an increasing demand for Asian American studies by student voices.

Eat This!

"Art history class" and "salivating" are two terms I never thought could be used in the same sentence. Yet I needed several sponges to wipe drool off my desk after watching the movie "Tampopo," a tribute to the Japanese noodle.

Prepare to drown in the depths of Kuntz's 'Jasper Lake'

Boston actor-writer John Kuntz's new play "Jasper Lake" never takes its cues from traditional sources. His script challenges the audience because instead of logically unfolding the plot, it communicates its story thematically via moments of poetic resonance.

Correction

Correction Due to an editing error, a picture caption on Oct. 7 ("Tufts alum promotes politics"), incorrectly implied the picture was of Steve Grossman and incorrectly stated he was a Tufts graduate. The picture was of Judge David Harrison, who graduated from Tufts in 1952. Grossman graduated from Princeton.

Inside Fitness

I want you to settle an argument. When beginning a fitness program, my friend thinks it's smarter to start really slow and work your way up. I say you should go balls out from the start, and not be such a little Nancy-boy. Will you just tell my wimpy friend that he's wrong?-The man's man from Hodgdon Hall.

The T does not force you to drive drunk

Evan Cochran made a valid point in his column, "If Only the T was Open all Night": it is absurd that the public transportation system of a major U.S. city closes shortly after midnight. As Cochran notes, Boston is not only a major metropolitan area, but it is home to hundreds of thousands of college age students. One would hope that city planners would have taken this knowledge into consideration when creating the public transportation system, but, alas, they did not. However, any "Johnny College" who is "pushed into" driving drunk because he or she refuses to get a cab, use a designated driver, or ride the Tufts late night Boston shuttle is ignorant, irresponsible and selfish.

ADAM PULVER | UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES

a The greatest health problem on the Tufts campus is not obesity. Looking at the global "obesity epidemic," this makes sense. Tufts students are disproportionately from the middle and upper classes, white and educated. We have free access to a gym, a wide variety of nutritious (and not-so-nutritious) foods to choose from on- and off-campus. We live in a relatively friendly environment to stay 'slim' as far as colleges in the United States go.
