Winkler's Weekly Symphony Guide: The classical meritocracy and 'A Toast!' to the BSO

The Boston Symphony Orchestra opens its 2022–23 season with a program that is emblematic of its philosophy and serves as a historically and musically diverse preview of what’s to come. The lineup includes seemingly disparate works that reach over three hundred years back into the Baroque with J.S. Bach’s “Keyboard Concerto in A” before rocketing into the here and now with Jessie Montgomery’s “Rounds” (2022), a work whose inception was only a few months ago following its premiere in March.

Twenty-one years ago, audiences around the world heard Cate Blanchett’s ethereal voice whisper “the world is changed,” with no idea how “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” and its sequels, would change the world of pop culture.They had no idea of the cinematic experience of epic proportions they were in for. It is only fitting then, that its prequel, the heavily anticipated “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” (2022–), begins the same way.

Let’s rehearse 'The Rehearsal' of a rehearsal

According to the Collins Dictionary,a rehearsal can be defined as a “session of exercise, drill, or practice, usually private, in preparation for a public performance, ceremony, etc.” Although it is a term usually reserved for performance art or public speaking, rehearsingcan also be seen in daily life such as thinking over an argument before a conversation. But, what if we could thoroughly rehearse for some of the most difficult and appalling moments of our lives?

Sweatshops in America and sustainability in fashion

The slow fashion movement was first introduced in 2007 by journalist Kate Fletcher, who detailed fashion’s responsibility regarding transparent practices, production of environmentally sustainable items and fair conditions for workers. Since then, interest in sustainable fashion has increased in niche groups and gained more public interest during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated and emphasized pre-existing inequities in society’s structure. It brought wealth inequality, late stage capitalism, environmental disasters and racial discrimination — especially during the George Floyd protests — to the forefront.

Anna Wintour is one of the biggest names in the fashion industry. Wintour has led Vogue as its editor in chief since 1988 and in her 30-year reign has revolutionized the fashion industry. Whether it be putting together the iconic September issue or turning the Met Gala into the global fashion event it has become known as today, Wintour’s influence has been undeniable and shows no signs of stopping. Wintour's latest endeavor, Vogue World, is yet another example of her success and abilities in altering the fashion industry.

Rihanna to headline Super Bowl LVII halftime show

Rihanna fans, known collectively as the Rihanna Navy, were in luck on Sept. 25 when Rihanna announced via social media that she would be headlining the halftime show at Super Bowl LVII. The posts announcing the news garnered much attention. As of Sept. 27, her tweet has amassed over 1.8 million likes, and her Instagram post has reached 6.7 million likes — expectable numbers for a superstar such as Rihanna. The last time Rihanna performed live on television was at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018 when she performed alongside DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller with their top five-peaking hit “Wild Thoughts” (2017).  It’s also considerable to note that the last studio album release from Rihanna came more than half a decade ago with “ANTI” (2016). Since then, Rihanna has focused primarily on her other business ventures such as her cosmetics company Fenty Beauty and fashion line Savage X Fenty.

‘Elvis’ doesn’t add much to the King’s life story, except Austin Butler

“Elvis” (2022) is, in a word, captivating. From his impoverished childhood in rural Mississippi where he discovered music, his adolescence in Memphis where he frequented Beale Street to his rise to stardom and subsequent crash and burn, “Elvis”takes us through the whole Elvis Presley story, but doesn’t add much to it. Baz Luhrmann, the famed director of “The Great Gatsby” (2013)  and “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), takes a whopping two hours and 39 minutes to tell us what could have mostly been gleaned from a five-minute skim of Presley’s Wikipedia page. Luhrmann does add color here and there, and it’s still a highly enjoyable watch — mainly for Austin Butler's performance as Presley, an excellent soundtrack and fantastic period costumes — but ultimately, “Elvis”falls short in expanding on the star’s life.

"Being a good mom is very important to me, and a good wife, and a good worker, and being all those things together is not easy, so I'm basically a ticking time bomb," Ryan says with a laugh.

'Do Revenge' is the teen comedy you've been waiting for

Netflix does not have a strong history with teen comedies, with a majority of them being predictable, repetitive and overall lacking in quality. From the three mediocre “The Kissing Booth” films to the uninteresting “The Last Summer” (2019), Netflix constantly produces teen comedies — and yet none of them remain memorable. Creating a successful teen comedy or drama is not an easy feat. Few become iconic within the world of pop culture — think “Mean Girls” (2004), “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012) and “Clueless” (1995). The recently released  “Do Revenge” (2022), though, has earned its rightful place among its predecessors and will potentially become a cult classic.

Weekender: 'Don’t Worry Darling' is intriguing, disturbing and potentially Pugh’s best career performance

From critics’ early reviews to Harry Styles“spitting” on Chris Pine at the premiere, “Don’t Worry Darling” (2022) is a film that seems to be everywhere, despite not having its theatrical release until Sept. 23. With a plethora of rumors of drama on set and Styles’ fans desperate to see their favorite artist in his latest film, it comes as no surprise that the “Don’t Worry Darling: The Live IMAX Experience,” which occurred on Sept. 19 in 21 locations, sold out within 24 hours. At the AMC Boston Common 19, the theater was packed at the 7:30 p.m. Monday screening, everyone eager to see what might be the most talked-about movie of the year.

'Only Murders in the Building' returns for a killer second season

Just under a year after its critically acclaimed first season, “Only Murders in the Building” (2021–) returned with a new murder mystery this summer. With a superbly talented cast led by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, the Hulu original continues to entertain audiences with an impressive blend of comedy and mystery.

Emma Chamberlain’s return to YouTube proves that quality trumps quantity

Influencer Emma Chamberlain has had an eventful 2022 thus far, from being Vogue’s correspondent and interviewer for the Met Gala in May to recently attending the Venice Film Festival as a Cartier brand ambassador. Chamberlain’s reputation as a fashion icon has skyrocketed — she recently graced the cover of Vogue Australia — and she has maintained her weekly podcast, “Anything Goes,” and coffee company, Chamberlain Coffee. Despite all of her success, many of Chamberlain’s fans still missed her YouTube content, which she paused back in December 2021. However, on June 22, after over six months, Chamberlain ended her YouTube hiatus with a video titled “what’s good in new york.”

With a heavy heart, the British royal family announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8. Elizabeth Windsor served as the longest reigning monarch in British history, ascending the throne at age 26 and served as the monarch for 70 years, from 1952 to 2022. Queen Elizabeth leaves behind a legacy, not just through her royal duties and accomplishments, but in fashion, film and her public persona captured by the media.

She is obsessed with law and philosophy, and known to fall asleep to podcasts about obscure Mergers & Acquisitions law. Cowboys, aliens and the spectacle: The symbolism in ‘Nope’

Director Jordan Peele cannot be stopped. Debuting in July 2022, “Nope” captured audiences as Peele’s third directorial film. The film shines as a new addition to the ‘space Western’ genre, which marries spaghetti Westerns with a thrilling sci-fi alien adventure. Peele implements his signature style of adapting old horror tropes to comment on contemporary issues. It is a movie that can be watched over and over again, where one may find new inside nods that Peele leaves for his audience.
