Love it or Haute it: Fanny packs

The fanny pack has been coming back in a huge way in the past year, but it is still a somewhat controversial look. Despite gracing the runways and numerous celebrities' street looks, some still think that the fanny pack is an unnecessary accessory that would be better left in the closet. Today, ...

Eggers talks mythos and making of 'The Lighthouse'

Followingtwo lighthouse keepers — the younger, mysterious Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) and the older, slightly senile Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) — “The Lighthouse” (2019) is a slow-burning descent into madness that’s thrilling to watch. It’s a fresh film that feels handmade, original ...

88rising's 'Head in the Clouds II' shows group's continuing improvement

As it is, "Head in the Clouds II" is a significant improvement for 88rising. In comparison to itspredecessor, this album contains fewer filler tracks and evokes more intense emotions through its overall sound. Each artist on the label has improved upon their sound, which will garner more attention to their individual names and the 88rising name in the music industry. Song choice tends to be a bit confusing, as the order in which the songs are arranged appears to be nearly random. While this is meant to be a collaborative effort, a smooth flow from beginning to end would help future projects from the label. Nevertheless, each individual song on the album shows 88rising at its best state yet, and each artist proves that they are ready to make major waves.

I began this week lost. I read the first few pages of multiple books, but nothing felt right. I wanted to read something else, something different. However, without knowing what, I got stuck not doing any reading at all.Luckily, I happen to follow a lot of bookstores on Instagram. They are constantly ...

Boston-born DIY outfit Twen comes to Brighton Music Hall

For many bands, making it out of one's original scene means a certain decline in authenticity. Sure, they still retain the same face-value humility when peddling their new cassette at their merch stand after the show, but especially in the age of Instagram popularity and the saturation of indie ...

Bangers and Bops: Social butterfly with sad girl tendencies

In high school, teachers often deemed me either a chatterbox or social butterfly. Did I speak a lot during class about things that were not necessarily about topics in any lesson plan? Of course, but in my defense, I felt like very few people reallyhave to know the ins and outs of calculus, while everyone ...

The Biebers’ wedding is a fashion affair to remember

Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber’s wedding at the end of September was much more than just nuptials. Despite being married in a private ceremony at a New York City courthouse last fall, the Biebers waited over a year to hold an official wedding. The event took place at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina on Sept. 30. Not only was the guest list compiled of A-listers like Usher, Jaden Smith and many members of the Kardashian-Jenner family, but the event itself was a fashion spectacle. Everyone in attendance seemed to be pulling out their best looks. Most notable was, of course, Hailey Bieber's wedding dress, or in fact, all three dresses she wore throughout the night.

The wet weirdness of 'The Lighthouse'

Madness isn’t exactly something to crash right into — there’s no cannonballing into a pool of insanity. Rather, it’s more likely that losing one’s mind is a slow wade through icy water, waves roaring and foaming. But there has to be a source to madness — not a moment that causes a mental ...

Capes have been called one of the new trends for this fall. What's the Mood?: Rainy day tunes

I’ve also got to point out two songs that I honestly think are two of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard, “Morning Crawls Towards You, And I” (2017) and “Fantasy Theme” (2016), both written by fairly unknown artists. They’re both pretty simple songs with maybe one or two instruments, so you can really focus on the singing and lyrics. I find that the music is enhanced by the low-fi acoustic sound, making them sound as if they were recorded in a makeshift studio in someone’s bedroom (which, to be fair, is a characteristic of a fair amount of the music I listen to anyways). “Necromancer” (2017) also has pretty similar vibes, and I’d lump it in the same low-fi acoustic category with those two other songs.

Oi, kitty girls! Following Yvie Oddly’s well-deserved victory in the season 11 finale, the world received a welcome four-month break from the ongoing onslaught of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (2009–) content. On Oct. 3, however, the reality TV behemoth finally hopped the pond. With its first two episodes, “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” (2019–) has served up a crop of ten sickeningly talented queens along with the BBC’s uniquely British take on the endless well of challenges and drama.

Bhallin' with Books: Retelling a classic

Yet, with more thought, I began to see the weird sense of importance placed upon Greek mythology in schooling. These myths do not represent morals that children should be instilled with either; violence, greed and rape are often key plot points. The emphasis on mythology, I believe, is partially a product of the marginalization of other non-white voices. Why has Greek mythology been canonized for American children and, say, Native American folk lore left behind?
