Runway Roundup: Barbie goes to art school

There are three key lessons that we learned from this week’s episode of “Project Runway” (2004-present). Number one: At a time when the average woman is a size 14, designers still refuse to learn how to make clothing for any one under 5’10” and larger than a size two. Number two: "Project ...

Under the Lights

Only a select few are labeled “the voice of a generation.” It’s downright silly to be dubbed the voice of three. And yet, that is the title that Vin Scully, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ play-by-play man on television and radio for the last 67 — yes, 67 — years, has earned over his unimaginably ...

Jumbo Steps: Christ’s horseshoe

It’s interesting to see what kind of questions we Jumbos ask each other at the start of every academic year. I’ve noticed that the majority of returning sophomores ask more personal questions compared to the start of freshman year, which makes sense since the first-year song and dance of asking ...

Is this thing on? Waka Flocka 101

Looks like it’s Monday again. As you may be aware, on Saturday, Secretary of State John Kerry hosted several of his European counterparts at Tufts for a discussion only open to delegations and the press. Only slightly less exclusive, Waka Flocka Flame will also deliver a speech of sorts to the Tufts community this coming Saturday. On the agenda are topics such as “throwin’ cash,” “sippin’ moscato” and “los[in’] them pants.”

Out of Left Field: Hammerin' Hanley

If you have been paying attention to baseball for the past few months, you may have noticed that Hanley Ramirez is now worth his $88 million contract. He played a crucial role in the Red Sox’s four-game sweep of the Yankees last weekend, going an electric 9 for 16, driving in 9 runs and hitting four home runs. Following Ramirez’s go-ahead home run late in last Sunday’s game, he ran out of the dugout for a curtain call to the Fenway faithful.

On Queer: On compulsory heterosexuality

This article was written by an anonymous member of the Rainbow House. When I was 13, I was an adept liar. I could wear straightness as a cloak and walk unnoticed through the halls of middle school. Whenever my friends would ask who I had a crush on, I would either deflect by saying, “Oh, no one at ...

The Arena: Round one

We’re only 43 days away from Election Day, and tonight is the first of three presidential debates between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Here’s a quick primer on what to watch for:First, it’s worth mentioning who you won’t see. ...

Karachi vs. Kansas: Who's who?

Natasha (N): So I know you guys have been dying to know who's Karachi and who's Kansas, or what it really means. Well, take it away Faryal.Faryal (F): I used to joke that when I was younger, I didn’t know I was any different from my peers in the white suburb of Kansas City. As I grew up, I ...

The Reel World: New York

I hold firm the belief that any college student can look at the poster of “Frances Ha”(2012) and think, “Yeah, same.” The image of star Greta Gerwig jumping and dancing on a New York street corner with hair flinging every which way, feet ominously positioned to fall down and eyes supremely focused ...

Maintaining Your Tuftsanity: Laugh It Off

Disclaimer: I feel it is necessary to begin this (my debut as a columnist for The Tufts Daily) with a reminder that I am a 19-year old college student who’s undecided about everything from her major to her favorite ice cream flavor, so any advice I attempt to give on how to maintain your “Tuftsanity” ...

All in good taste: Saus review

Whether in Davis Square or beyond, sometimes it’s refreshing to get a break from Dewick and Carmichael. I’m Parker, a sophomore who admittedly spends an unhealthy amount of time searching for tasty Boston restaurants. This column will hopefully provide some must (or must not) stops in the Boston ...

Jumping Hurdles: Down with kale

Ever heard of "Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide"? Brace-faced, pimply, lanky little Anna was obsessed with that show, and all I ever wanted in middle school was a guide that told me step-by-step how to navigate life. Now, quite a few years later as a washed-up college junior, I still ...

The Coin Toss: Week Three

Two weeks of NFL football have come and gone. We have seen everything from national anthem protests to a couple of Patriots wins (sans Brady), and another RGIII injury. Did you expect anything else? Those might have been predictable, but not every outcome is a certainty. There are surprise upsets, ...

Runway Roundup: Revving Up for Season 15

For the uninitiated, "Project Runway" (2004-present) is “on Lifetime, I guess?” The show is in its 15th season and has stacked up an impressive 50 Emmy nominations despite using phrases like “magically muppety” to describe its designers’ work. Some say the task of quantifying such ...

The Echo Chamber: Inside Affordable Care

There’s a spot on campus, right behind Eaton Hall, where, if said just at the right angle, an echo of your voice can be heard. At Tufts, an echo of political thought and ideas can be heard not just behind Eaton Hall, but all around us. Tufts, like many liberal arts universities around the country, ...

Jumbo Steps: Stale

Let me take you back to 2011: the year that birthed unto us a rather unforgivably distasteful acronym, YOLO("You Only Live Once").I personally hate the acronym because of its now muddy meaning. The mantra is well-intended, but its execution — not so much. I find it almost exclusively reserved ...

The Reel World: The look

When I arrived at Tufts, I thought of a movie that parallels the point where I am in my life, as I often do. This time, I couldn’t help but recall the ending of “The Kids Are Alright” (2010). The situation, the final goodbye before I enter college, is the same, except I’m not Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, and Annette Bening and Julianne Moore aren't my moms (tragic, I know). Wasikowska’s character Joni watches her family members as they leave, but she quickly turns around. She then looks out at the quad next to her with squinted eyes that soon widen and pursed lips that curl into a fleeting smile.

Under the Lights: The athlete's voice

Everyone has something to say about Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who has, in protest, refused to stand for the traditional playing of the national anthem before any 49ers game this year.“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people ...
