Men's lacrosse cruises past Trinity, falls to Union and Middlebury

Tufts men’s lacrosse added another NESCAC win to their record after beating Trinity College 21–10 on Saturday, March 26. However, Tufts suffered its first loss of the season on March 29 in a home matchup against seventh-ranked Union College with a 17–12 final game score. Tufts also lost to Middlebury on Saturday, April 2, 21–14. The Jumbos’ record now sits at 6–2 overall and 3–1 in conference play.

Women’s lacrosse beats MIT, falls to No. 1 Middlebury

After winning five straight games, Tufts faced an out-of-conference opponent in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, whom Tufts beat 22–3 in an all-around performance. With 14 different Tufts scorers, the Jumbos outclassed the Engineers who previously held a 4–3 record. First-year attacker Margie Carden and junior attacker and midfielder Caroline Walter led the Jumbos in scoring with each player netting a hat trick. Senior goalie Molly Laliberty commented on what went right for Tufts.

Vaccine mandates protect people. That has been the position of the New York City government since ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio began the private sector mandate in December. Last week, that position stayed the same in theory. Unless, apparently, you’re Kyrie Irving. Or Aaron Judge. Or Anthony Rizzo, Jacob deGrom or any rich and powerful New Yorker with enough pull to get an exemption.

Women’s swimming and diving wins 2 national championships

The Tufts women’s swimming and diving program put on a display for the ages two weeks ago at the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships held at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The team’s seventh place finish at the meet, the best for the Jumbos since 1982, was headlined by championship-winning performances in the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard freestyle.

Women’s basketball ends season in Sweet 16 of NCAA tournament

The Tufts women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end against Amherst in the NCAA Sweet 16, ending a successful season and postseason playoff run. The Jumbos lost a game in the regular season to the Amherst Mammoths with a final score of 62–53 and once more to be eliminated from the NESCAC tournament in the semifinals with a final score of 73–59. Despite a slow start, the Jumbos made the game close and only came up three points short of advancing to the Elite Eight, with a final score of 48–45. Head Coach Jill Pace said the team’s players went into their third faceoff with Amherst focused on themselves.

The Final Whistle: Italy fails to qualify for consecutive World Cups

When the playoff draw was announced for UEFA’s last three spots in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, many fans were disappointed as Portugal and Italy were drawn in the same bracket. Months of buildup set the stage for this crucial encounter filled with storylines. On one hand, the Ronaldo-led Portuguese team hoped to capitalize on its golden generation while on the other side stood Head Coach Roberto Mancini’s Italy, defending European champions. The prospect of either team missing out would be seen as a national disgrace. Before these heavyweights met, however, they would play their respective semi-finals against Turkey and North Macedonia.

Jaidyn Appel, Lia Rotti win individual national championships in track and field

Tufts women’s indoor track and field team performed extremely well in the NCAA Division III Championships this past weekend. With four athletes competing in separate events, the team accrued 20 points all together, enough for an eighth place overall finish. Two Jumbos won individual national championships in their respective events, with junior Jaidyn Appel winning the high jump and junior Lia Rotti winning the triple jump.

The Wraparound: NHL trade deadline edition

No matter where teams are in the standings, the NHL trade deadline is a pivotal point in the season. Top contenders have a chance to add the final piece to the puzzle that is their roster, while bottom feeders can stockpile draft picks and prospects to fuel their rebuilds. Some general managers look at the deadline as a great opportunity to patch holes while others, like Carolina’s Don Waddell, see it as “one of the most dangerous days in hockey”.

Over the Top Football: The race for the top four

In December, Manchester City demolished Leicester City 6–3 to enter the New Year eight points clear of Liverpool. After scoring 17 goals in three games, it looked like the gap would continue to widen. However, following their draw against Crystal Palace on Monday, their momentum and point advantage to win the league have tremendously declined. As it stands, Liverpool will be a point behind them if they win their next game against Arsenal. Manchester will need to find their form if they hope to take home the Premier League title.

Karim Benzema inspires historic Real Madrid comeback

After a scuffle near the byline, the ball lands at the feet of Neymar who, with a momentary glance to his right shoulder, flicks it over the desperate leap of Éder Militão and into the path of Kylian Mbappe. The Brazilian defender could only watch as the Frenchman raced away, his long strides propelling him towards goal. Now facing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, a 6 feet, 7 inches Belgian wall, Mbappe opens his body, projecting a far post shot, and within seconds buries the ball in the bottom right corner — 1–0 on the night, 2–0 on aggregate. Game over. Parisian supporters, tucked away high in the stands of the Santiago Bernabéu, roared into the night.

Women's lacrosse beats Williams, falls to Colby to start the season

Tufts women’s lacrosse returned to action last weekend with two conference matchups: one against Colby on Saturday and one against Williams on Sunday. The Jumbos finished the weekend with mixed results after losing to Colby 9–4 and defeating Williams 13–9 in their home opener at Bello Field. Tufts came into the season ranked No. 2 in Division III lacrosse but fell six spots after Saturday’s loss.

Men's lacrosse returns, handily defeats Colby

The Tufts men’s lacrosse team had a commanding start to the season on Saturday in its first game and home opener with a 27–7 win over Colby.  Tufts brought the intensity in the first quarter against a Colby team that looked defeated in warmups. The game was an opportunity for a lot of young players to see their first minutes on Bello Field and have a positive contribution to the outcome of the game. While the underclassmen played a significant role, the upperclassmen and veteran players controlled the game in every facet. The Jumbos made a statement to start their 2022 campaign playing against the Colby Mules
