The Wraparound: Time to shorten the NHL schedule?
By Timothy Valk | March 1082 games, 246 periods, 4,920 minutes. That’s a lot of time spent doing anything, let alone throwing your body around on ice skates.

Last weekend, the Tufts men’s squash team officially finished their 2021–22 season at the College Squash Association National Collegiate Individual Championships in Philadelphia.
La Liga is often characterized by the big three: Real Madrid, F.C. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. In recent years, Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Villarreal have cemented themselves as the chasing pack with impressive campaigns both domestically and in Europe. None would’ve foreseen Real Betis’ ascent over the last two years. In the 2019–20 season, Betis finished 15th with a points tally of just 41, five points off the drop zone. In July 2020, veteran Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini was appointed head coach. His debut season saw Betis finish sixth, securing Europa League football and appearing in the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey. Today, Los Verdiblancos sit fifth, two points adrift of Barcelona and defending champions Atletico Madrid. But how has Pellegrini turned the fortunes of this fringe midtable side into dark horses challenging for Champions League status?
After a spectacular freshman season that included a first-team all-NESCAC selection, Riddhi Joshi competed in Philadelphia, Penn. from March 4–5 at the CSA National Collegiate Individual Championships.
Ideally, history leaves nobody out.
Tufts women’s basketball beat Clarks Summit and DeSales this weekend to advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament. Despite losing to Amherst in the semifinals of the NESCAC tournament, the team received a bid and high seeding for the NCAA tournament, allowing for a Jumbo home court advantage in Cousens Gym. On Friday night, the Jumbos confidently defeated the Clarks Summit Defenders 84–54. To finish off the weekend, they beat the DeSales Bulldogs 58–47.
On Feb. 24, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine after weeks of speculation regarding military buildup across the border. Since then, clouds of smoke have circled above the major cities of Kharkiv and Chernihiv as airstrikes continue inflicting both military and civilian casualties. In response to the attacks on Kyiv, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba reminded the world that the last time its capital suffered such a catastrophe was in 1941 against Nazi Germany. The tremors of Russia’s actions have been felt across the globe, and soccer has responded firmly.
It’s been nearly a decade since the International Olympic Committee formally made gender-balanced participation a goal. With the introduction of women’s monobob, women’s big air freestyle skiing as well as the addition of four mixed-gender events, the IOC is finally seeing progress; Beijing’s 2022 Winter Olympics was the most gender-balanced Winter Olympics in program history.
As the MLB owners and players association have repeatedly clashed over the past several months, going back and forth hashing out a new collective bargaining agreement, a painful truth has become increasingly clear: baseball is in deep trouble.
The Tufts University women’s fencing team traveled to Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. on Saturday to compete in the 2022 New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Championships.
Dropping its last contest of the season against well-renowned Brown University by only one match, Tufts women’s squash challenged teams that were previously a tier or two above Tufts, finishing the 2021–22 season as the second highest nationally ranked NESCAC team at No. 12. While infiltrating the top ten may have been a pipe dream for this program a few years ago, authentic leadership and outstanding newcomers have put this goal on the horizon.
In Ontario, Canada, Toronto Maple Leafs fans don blue and white jerseys with the number “34” on their backs. Auston Matthews is their hero — their superstar — and he’s playing like one this season. With a sneaky release and lethal shot accuracy, Matthews is tied for the league-lead with 37 goals and can easily hit 50 with the pace that he's on.
The Tufts women’s basketball team’s run at the program’s fourth NESCAC title fell short on Saturday as the No. 2 seed Tufts fell to the No. 3 seed Amherst 73–59. Playing from behind for most of the game, the Jumbos fought valiantly but were unable to complete the comeback against the NESCAC’s top-ranked defense.
Tufts men’s ice hockey finished the season off strong with a good showing in the NESCAC playoff tournament, winning its play-in game against Middlebury 4–1, but falling to Colby in the quarterfinals 5–1.
The men’s track and field team competed at Middlebury at the indoor New England Div. III Championships on Friday and Saturday, and placed third overall out of 23 teams.
While the game is played with a ball on a field and two goal posts, soccer transcends the events within the pitch. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the demand for peace throughout Europe's top five leagues illustrated the binding effect of soccer. In the Premier League, fans and players stood behind banners calling for anti-war. Manchester City and Everton donned Ukrainian flags to show solidarity.
Women’s track and field narrowly came in second place overall this past weekend at the New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Colby College. Coming up just half a point short behind the first place finishers and notorious track powerhouse, Williams College, this is the Jumbos’ best team finish since they won the meet in 2013.

Last weekend saw the 71st annual NBA All-Star Weekend come and go. A new and improved team-skills challenge, a 3-point contest that crowned the first center winner since 2012 and an electrifying All-Star Game made for a great overall weekend. However, one contest stood out clearly from the rest as particularly unexciting, boring and flat-out embarrassing.
