Switch Hit

Sachin Tendulkar, legendary Indian cricketer, steps up to bat. There are two balls left in the match and six runs needed to save the day. He misses out on the first ball. The subcontinent waits with bated breath as he swings toward that second ball, and then it happens: It's out of the stadium, into the hands of the seething masses — it's a six!

Men's Soccer | Buccaneers' goalkeeping robs Jumbos of a second win

Tuesday night's clash with Mass. Maritime had all of the makings of the perfect tune-up game for the men's soccer team. The Buccaneers had dropped four straight matches and had been shutout in their last three. Tufts was at home and was looking to repeat its 4-1 non-conference victory over Endicott this past week and thus double its win total.

Golf | Solid outing leaves golf team looking to future success

Buoyed by great performances from two new players, the Tufts golf team tied for 11th place at this weekend's Duke Nelson Invitational. The Jumbos shot a combined 312 on Sunday, besting their score of 320 from the day before. This total of 632 was enough to make the top half of the 25 teams in attendance.

Sailing | Disqualified Jumbos hope to recover

The co−ed sailing team came into the year aspiring to reach the top five in the highly competitive New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) and at least the top 10 in the United States.

Ethan Frigon | The Beard Abides

The NFL, hands down America's most−beloved sports league, opened its season two weekends ago with a depressing reminder that it might not be doing the same come next September. The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and the owners expires at the end of the 2010−11 season. This means that if DeMaurice Smith of the NFLPA and commissioner Roger Goodell can't forge a new deal within the next 136 days, a training camp lockout looms — with the ugly possibility of it spilling over into next fall, shortening or even cancelling the 2011−12 NFL season.

Women's Cross Country | Fresh faces shine for women's cross country team

With the coming of each new year, every college team hopes that it can get a talented and energetic freshman class on which to rest their hopes for the future. Alex Prewitt | Live from Mudville

It's a knee-jerk reaction innately ingrained in humans, similar to flinching at a punch or screaming during a frightening movie. Deeply embedded in every sports fan's DNA is the desire to press the panic button, to throw up one's arms if problems arise and abandon all hope when feces and fan collide.

Football | Handful of mistakes muddles otherwise impressive scrimmage

The storm clouds cleared Friday night before the football team took the field at home for its scrimmage against Bowdoin. Though the "game-atmosphere practice," as senior quarterback Anthony Fucillo described it, ended with a 19-13 Polar Bears victory, the rejuvenating excitement of a new year filled the air as the Jumbos prepared to start their regular season on Saturday against the Hamilton Continentals.

Touchdowns abound: QBs take center stage

After a Sunday slate of games in which eight teams put up 30 points or more and six quarterbacks threw for at least 300 yards — and two for over 400 — we see once again how a high-powered passing attack can make or break an NFL team.

Women's Tennis | Jumbos open fall season at ITA Regional Championships

She might have been the national champion last spring, but after falling in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships this past weekend, senior co-captain Julia Browne knows too well how each year brings a new set of competition and a new uphill battle.

Women's Cross Country | Newly expanded team looks to improve upon last year

The 2009 season started off on the wrong foot for the women's cross country team. Top runner Stephanie McNamara, a senior, was injured prior to the start of the season, leaving only two senior runners to lead the squad, neither of whom consistently scored points for the Jumbos. The team pushed on without McNamara at the forefront but has expressed disappointment with the overall results.

Football | Bring the noise: Jumbos open season with scrimmage

The commuter rail rumbled past on the nearby train tracks, the filming tower's motor simultaneously emitting a deafening whir. Moments later on the football team's adjacent practice field, a roar went up from the baby−blue−and−white−clad players, an audible sign that football season is near.

Locked out

The National Football League (NFL) is back. The season's first week gave us the usual share of touchdowns, big hits, concussions, celebratory chest beating, upward angle shots of cheerleaders and any other aspect of football that has been absent since the Super Bowl. Fantasy football is relevant again, as is the gleam of Terry Bradshaw's bald head. The return of professional football makes homework very hard to finish on Sundays because one can sit on the couch and watch televised coverage — pre−game and post−game included — nonstop between 11 a.m. and midnight. And that is wonderful.

Volleyball | Jumbos fly to Georgia, start 2-2 in turbulent weekend

After a disappointing Friday at the Emory Classic in Georgia this past weekend, a strong recovery on Saturday showed that the No. 22-ranked volleyball team knows how to deal with adversity. Whether this team is good enough to repeat its 2009 trip to the NCAA tournament, however, remains up in the air.
