With Spring Break just around the corner, many of you are surely grappling with the following common dilemma: do I go out the night before my 6 a.m. flight, or stay in?! You know the answer, and your trusty Lushettes will provide a guide to the optimal night before your fated flight.
The theory goes as such: if you go out, you're not going to sleep the night before the flight. You might as well save the shut eye for the airtime, so you'll want to find a bar that's open the latest. We suggest Faneuil Hall, as many establishments in that area are open until 2 a.m. That way, you won't be home until around 3 a.m. and by the time you wash the smoke out of your hair and style it again for all the cute guys/girls you plan on running into in the airport, it'll be time to head out. There, now you have a full night of fun before spring break has even begun.
Now, in a place like Faneuil with bars on every corner, your new predicament lies in choosing the proper locale. We suggest The Purple Shamrock. Not only will you have a place to party all night, but this Irish bar will also be a great precursor to the upcoming shenanigans imminent on St. Patrick's Day.
Located on State Street, in the heart of Faneiul Hall, this bar is sandwiched between McDonald's and some other bar that you won't want to go to. Though sometimes the line out front seems intimidating due to its length, it moves swiftly and is worth the wait.
Once you arrive at the front, be prepared to pay the bouncer the standard $5 cover. While this may seem disheartening considering the lack of cover charge at most other local establishments, it's only $5 and is minute in comparison to the experience you will have.
Inside, you will notice that you're an idiot if you can lose your friends here considering the Shamrock is not very large and only consists of one floor. Off to the left side is an area with tables for those who are weary of breaking it down on the dance floor. But if you're less boring and don't plan to spend your night standing around, you can head over to an intimate dance floor with the sounds of cheesy pop blaring from the Thursday night DJ's play list.
If you feel yourself becoming parched while working up a sweat on the dance floor, boogie on over to the bar located in the rear. You may have to jostle for a spot, but the bar will offer you a wide variety of mixed drinks, bottled drinks and drafts. Don't order any mixed drinks, especially a Bloody Mary, from the shorter and dark haired male bartender because he has no idea what he's doing back there. It's safest to go with draft or bottle if you have him waiting on you.
At the end of the night, exiting the Shamrock will have you in a prime location compared to other bars in order to hail down a cab. They should be driving by the front of this bar repeatedly and only $15-20 should bring you back into the comfortable confines of Medford/Somerville.
So now you're home and only have a few more hours to kill before heading back down 93 to the airport. If you're not shacking up with a fly honey that you picked up at the bar (and this has been known to happen at the Shamrock) you'll surely pass the time digesting the events of the night. Then it's off to Logan (or Providence if you're cheap -- and there's no shame in that) and time to board your flight. Now is the appropriate time to have that Bloody Mary you missed out on.
