Senior Julia S. Goldberg gained national recognition for her intellectual endeavors and leadership by being named a USA Today College Academic All-Star.
The paper announced its 60 selections from an applicant pool of about 600 last Thursday. The winners were divided into three tiers and Goldberg was honored as a second-team scholar. Beyond the 60, there were also 14 honorable mentions. According to USA Today, winning students gain recognition not only for outstanding academic records and the quality of the essays they submit, but also for the ability to "extend their intellectual abilities beyond the classroom to benefit society."
Goldberg's commitment to this ideal was underscored last year when she won a Truman Scholarship that provides students with financial support for graduate school and connects them with public-service oriented government jobs. Goldberg will be working with the Office of Global Health Affairs this summer, pursuing her interest in public health.
Goldberg said that USA Today makes an effort to provide a cross-section of exemplary students from across the nation.
"It's trying to bring together people with scholastic skill from a range of different universities," she said. "It's trying to show a depth of knowledge and intellectual curiosity of a lot of different schools and students."
A Tisch Scholar at Tufts, Goldberg runs track and cross country and plans to participate in the president's marathon challenge this year.
