New England recognizes three from track program

Yesterday the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA) released its 2007 Div. III regional awards, and three Jumbos headed the list.

Men's track and field coach Ethan Barron took in the Coach of the Year honor, while senior tri-captain Fred Jones won Men's Field Athlete of the Year and junior Cat Beck grabbed the Women's Track Athlete of the Year award, giving Tufts three of the six New England honors.

In only his second year as head coach, Barron led his squad to a second-place finish at the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 16-17. Of course, Barron and his team owe much of their success to the leadership of Jones, who will be the only Jumbo representing the squad at Nationals this weekend in Houston, competing in the long jump and the triple jump.

On the women's side, Beck's continual assault of the record books has earned her the award for the second-straight year. Like Jones, she, along with her DMR counterparts, will represent the Jumbo squad at Nationals this weekend.

Both the men's and women's programs have established themselves amongst the region's elite, notching second-place finishes behind Williams at this year's Div. III New England championships.
