The yearly speculation about who will play at Spring Fling will come to an end early next month. On April 6, the Concert Board will announce this year's performers during the Battle of the Bands, an annual contest between musical groups on campus.
In their hunt for a performer for this year's event, which will take place on April 28, the board will be able to make use of the $18,000 of buffer funding that was approved for them earlier this month.
The Concert Board often receives buffer funding since the initial budget for the event is always set more than a year in advance and it is hard to determine booking costs that far ahead of time, according to Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate Treasurer Evan Dreifuss. This year's increase in funding was not out of the ordinary, he said.
The total cost for Spring Fling ranges from around $100,000 to $110,000 every year. "When you add up the cost of the headliners, the opener, the cost of setting up and the food, it's the most expensive event of the year," Dreifuss said.
Last year, Guster headlined Spring Fling. The hip-hop duo Blackalicious and indie rock group The Slip also performed. The Roots performed in 2004, and Busta Rhymes was booked for 2003 and 2005, but was rained out on both occasions.
Concert Board Co-Chair and junior Devra Bergman declined to comment on which bands are currently being considered, but promised an enjoyable event.
"It will be a great show," she said. "We always try our hardest to plan a great show."
