Athletes of the Week

Lauren gelmetti, SOFTBALL

The sophomore southpaw was on top of her game on Saturday. Gelmetti started off the Jumbos' three-game day against Colby on the right note, throwing a five-inning no-hitter, walking no one and striking out seven.

The lone base runner reached on an error in the top of the fifth; however, Gelmetti recovered and surrendered no more, retiring the next three batters. The win jump-started the Jumbos, sparking them to a three-game sweep of the Mules on Saturday and running their league record to 11-1. With their first-place finish in the NESCAC East, Tufts will host the NESCAC Tournament this weekend at Spicer Field.

Gelmetti improved her ERA to a team-low 2.05 and pushed her record to 7-2 on the season. She has an impressive 58 strikeouts in 65 innings of work while walking only 10 batters. Additionally, Gelmetti has held opposing batters to a .240 average. The shutout was Gelmetti's second of the season.

Chase bibby, men's lacrosse

The sophomore midfielder put together a gem in what was perhaps the most important regular-season game ever for Tufts' men's lacrosse team. With the score deadlocked at six and the game in sudden-death overtime, Bibby beat Middlebury's sophomore Mike Stone and fired a shot past goalkeeper and senior tri-captain Alex Palmisano to notch the game-winning goal for the Jumbos.

Bibby's goal gave his team its first-ever regular season NESCAC championship and snapped a winless spell against the Panthers that dated back to 1967. He also opened the scoring for the Jumbos, netting an important first goal with just eight seconds left in the first period, and assisted on another tally in the fourth quarter.

Against Amherst on Tuesday, Bibby's aggressiveness on the offensive end was a key factor in Tufts' 11-9 victory. He contributed a goal and an assist and took a team-high nine shots, putting seven of them on target.

The Jumbos now boast an 8-1 record in league play and have earned home-field advantage through the remainder of the tournament. On Saturday, the top-seeded Jumbos will square off once again with sixth-seeded Middlebury, which demolished Trinity 16-4 in first-round action yesterday.
