Cat beck, women's track and field
What would Athlete of the Week be without Cat Beck?
Yet again the junior outran her competitors, this time at the Coast Guard Invitational, leading her team to a first-place finish atop a field of ten squads.
Beck won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.32, edging out Wesleyan's Stephanie O'Brien by about two seconds. In addition to her win in the 800 meter, Beck finished in first place in the 1500-meter run, turning in a time of 4:40.66. This time Beck did not even let her opponents get close, beating the second-place finisher, Coast Guard's Jayna McCarron, by a whopping 14 seconds.
Complementing her two individual wins, Beck ran a leg of the 4 x 400 meter relay with juniors Kaleigh Fitzpatrick, Joyce Uang, and Anna Shih, winning with a time of 4:14.07. With the 4 x 400 win and her two individual wins, Beck had a hand in earning a total of 30 points for the Jumbos on the day.
The Jumbos ran away with the Invitational, finishing first among ten teams, with a total of 201 points. The second-place team, Mount Holyoke totaled 66 points on the day.
Clem mcnally, men's lacrosse
The men's lacrosse team stands atop the NESCAC after Williams lost to Wesleyan and the Jumbos beat Colby this weekend. And sophomore Clem McNally had his hand in all of the action.
McNally tallied four goals on the day, with all four of them coming in the second half - the obvious difference-maker as Tufts notched five unanswered second-half goals in the come-from-behind win over the Mules.
Trailing the Mules 6-5 at halftime, the Jumbos needed a spark in their offense if they were going to beat an underperforming Colby team which is an unimpressive 2-5, 1-3 in NESCAC, this year. McNally had three of the five goals Jumbo goals in the third period.
With the edge on Tufts' side, and the score at 10-6, Colby mounted a comeback of its own. Junior Drew Piekarski found the net twice to bring the score to 10-8 before McNally netted his fourth goal of the second half, handing the mometum back to his team.
McNally is currently leading the Jumbos in goals this season with 20 in addition to three assists. Earlier this year McNally was named the Nike Div. III Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse for his stellar play in games during March 19-25.
With the Jumbos now leading the NESCAC, McNally will look to lead his team past Endicott on Wednesday before beginning a big NESCAC streak in which the Jumbos will take on Bowdoin Saturday and Williams on April 16th.
