Brown and Brew and Brannan

New York-based singer, songwriter and actor Jay Brannan performed at Brown and Brew last night as part of the GAYpril series of on-campus events sponsored by Tufts' LGBT center. Brannan's role in John Cameron Mitchell's latest release, "Shortbus" (2006), has recently brought the Texas native to the spotlight.

The film follows a variety of young New Yorkers whose lives intertwine through their experience at an underground club known for its open views of sexuality. In the movie, Brannan plays his song "Soda Shop," a catchy pop tune featured on the soundtrack. Since this role, the young artist has grown increasingly popular on Web sites like MySpace.com and YouTube.com, where he has developed a loyal fan base.

The intimate show was the ideal venue for Brannan, equipped only with his acoustic guitar and swooning voice. A highlight of his set was a hilarious cover of N.W.A.'s "Straight Out of Compton." His soft, high-pitched singing style added a unique quality to the lyrics of the rap song. His original material was also well received by the crowd, perhaps a sign that he won't remain so underground for much longer.
