looking back (April 8) | the masters
It was a strange week at Augusta for the 2007 Masters. The unseasonably cold weather in Georgia left fairways and greens unusually dry and forced players to deal with a strong early spring wind. All in all, the tournament saw more bogeys than birdies, and not a single player finished under par.
But a week filled with strange developments saved its biggest surprise for Sunday, when ultimate darkhorse Zach Johnson, who entered The Masters with just one prior victory on the PGA Tour, captured the green jacket, withstanding a late surge from Tiger Woods to earn his first major. With a final round 69, Johnson became the first golfer not in Sunday's final pairing to win the title. His one-over 289 also tied a Masters record for the highest winning score.
Woods, who has never come from behind on a Sunday to win a major championship, held a one-shot lead through the fourth hole and seemed poised to win his fifth Masters. Woods, however, blew a lead in a major for just the third time in his illustrious career, only mustering pars on his last three holes and failing to close in on Johnson, who birdied three of his final six holes.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson never managed to mount much of a challenge throughout the week, finishing tied for 24th.
looking ahead (april 13-14) | men's baseball vs. bowdoin
After consecutive losses to Williams and Brandeis, the baseball team will look to regoup in this weekend's series againt Bowdoin. Tufts (13-6, 3-0 NESCAC East) is currently ranked first in the East, and No. 4 in New England, while Bowdoin (9-7, 4-1 NESCAC East) stands a close second in the league. Friday and Saturday's games will be key for both teams in either securing a foothold for the Jumbos, or gaining important ground for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin bested the Jumbos last year by one game for the top spot in the NESCAC. The Jumbos were also 0-3 in their regular season match-ups against the Polar Bears last year. This is the only regular season showdown for the two teams, and the games are must wins for Tufts if it hopes to stay on track entering the stretch-run of the season.
After a meltdown against Brandeis Tuesday, in which a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh quickly devolved into a 9-2 loss for the Jumbos, the team is ready to take on Bowdoin, who is on a two-game winning streak.
