Perhaps as an act of contrition for the Phillies' recent mediocrity and the Eagles' inexplicable loss to Green Bay in Week 1, fate smiled upon Alex "Large And In Charge" Bloom last week. Bloom blossomed like an Outback fried onion to emerge with 13 wins in the opening week, tops among all Daily editors.
Ross "Nick Punto Fan Club" Marrinson is all alone in second place, falling one game behind Bloom with the Ravens' loss in Cincinnati Monday night but still proving that the creme floats on top. After that, it's a four-way melee scrambling for third place.
Ethan "The Eagle Has" Landy, Evans "A Division Title To" Clinchy and Tim "Wynona" Judson are sitting in third at 11-5. Sapna "Bill Belichick" Bansil WAS even with that bunch at 11-5 before some shady "Patriots' camera crew" picking practices. Luckily Liz "Roger Goodell" Hoffman had no problem docking Bansil a point, thus strenghtening her tenuous hold as E.C. commissioner and knocking one more competitor off the 11-5 pedestal.
That knocks Bansil down to 10-6 with a Barry Bonds-sized asterisk, but still a game ahead of Rachel "Chiquita, Chiquita" Dolin and Carly "Give 'em" Helfand.
Week 2 brings at least two games guaranteed to ruin everyone's picks. Chargers-Pats (who's better?) and Houston-Carolina (who's worse?) will likely have Bloom cursing, Clinchy pacing and Dolin still hopelessly adrift in waters of ineptitude.
Daily Sports alum Andrew "Male Pattern" Bauld-ness takes a break from nervously checking for grays to prove he can still run with the young'uns. He offers his picks from a third-grade classroom in Belmont.
