Fall Ball 2007

At around 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, the stage is set for Fall Ball 2007 to begin.

The Gantcher Center has been transformed into a vivacious scene that rivals the hottest nightclubs in Boston - at least, those that would admit Tufts freshmen. Doors open at 9:30 p.m., but only a few eager underclassmen have trickled in by the time I've set up my equipment atop the DJ booth, which sits over 100 feet above the dance floor.

The lights rove the stage as cautious newcomers start to dance. Their hang-ups are short-lived as the intermittent darkness of the dance floor provides a mask for the self-conscious.

Soon, I almost can't believe what I'm seeing. These precocious over-achievers can grind with the best of them. I muse that I could easily be back home in Miami at a posh nightclub on South Beach, and I would never know the difference.

I wander among the dancers whom I instruct to act "as if I'm not there," and boy, do they.

These pictures are the best representation of what I saw at Fall Ball 2007, an undergraduate class of Tufts students who were eager to let loose, a well-deserved release.
