NESCAC unveils fall 2007 postseason award winners

Men's Cross Country

Senior tri-captain Dave Sorensen and sophomore Jesse Faller were each named to the All-NESCAC second team. Sorensen and Faller were consistent for the Jumbos all season, with each recording four top-10 finishes this fall.

At the NESCAC championship meet on Oct. 27, the pair were the Jumbos' top two finishers, with Sorensen finishing ninth and Faller 12th overall. Faller then leapfrogged Sorensen two weeks later to finish tops on the Jumbos at New England Regionals, finshing the 8,000-meter course in 25:04 to take third in the region while Sorensen checked in 11th. The season culminated in a successful Nationals finish for Faller, the Jumbos' only All-American with an 18th-place finish in 25:03.

Sorensen completed the triple crown of All-NESCAC honors by also earning spots on the All-Sportsmanship and All-Academic slates; on the latter, he was joined by junior teammate Dave Tilton.

Women's Soccer

Sophomore Cara Cadigan, who set an all-time Tufts record with 19 goals in her first active season, was named both NESCAC Rookie of the Year and an all-conference First Team selection for her efforts. Joining her on the first squad is senior co-captain Martha Furtek, who contributed three goals, five assists and invaluable senior leadership to the young squad.

Furtek's co-captain, defender Annie Benedict, was named to the second team. A quintet of Jumbo seniors - Furtek, Rebecca Abbott, Julia Brown, Joelle Emery and Lauren Fedore - were named to the All-Academic team, alongside junior teammate Maya Shoham. Abbott was also an All-Sportsmanship selection.

Golf

Senior tri-captain Dave Hunt was named second team All-NESCAC after he finished in a tie for ninth place at the NESCAC Golf Championships in September. Hunt was consistently one of the top players for coach Bob Sheldon's Jumbos, who fell one spot short of qualifying for the inaugural conference championship round in April. The Jumbos also were 25th in the New England Championships, though at one point they were in third place at the event.

Hunt was also selected as the lone Tufts representative on the All-Sportsmanship team, while junior Phil Haslett earned All-Academic honors.

Football

Sophomore safety Tom Tassinari was the only sophomore on the All-NESCAC First Team, as he finished second in the league in interceptions and was twice named the conference Defensive Player of the Week. Joining Tassinari on the first team are senior tri-captains fullback Kevin Anderson and tight end Kevin Gleason.

The second team features a pair of juniors in linebacker Tyson Reynoso, who led the Jumbos with 60 tackles, and wide receiver David Halas. Senior Thomas Ames, the anchor of the offensive line, was also a Second Team selection.

Reynoso and Halas were also All-Academic selections, along with senior tri-captain Adam Arsenault and juniors Stephen Black, Jake Dellorco and Jeremiah Lechleiter. Sophomore defensive back Alex Perry was named to the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship team.

Volleyball

Senior captain Katie Wysham was the lone member of the volleyball team to be named to the all-conference teams, as she was one of seven NESCAC First Team selections. Wysham, who led the league with 1.59 blocks per game and 71 solo blocks, was also one of three Jumbo All-Academic selections. Joining her are juniors Natalie Goldstein, who appeared in the most games for the Jumbos this season, and Stacy Filocco.

Though she sat out the year due to torn cartilage in her knee, senior Stephanie Viola provided key leadership all season and represents Tufts on the All-Sportsmanship team.

Women's Cross Country

Senior tri-captains Katy O'Brien and Cat Beck were named to the All-NESCAC first-team after turning in yet another set of stellar performances this season. O'Brien provided solid leadership, winning two of the team's first three races. Beck, though injured to start the season, came back strong and ran to a ninth-place finish in her first race with the team. O'Brien and Beck were exceptional throughout the postseason, finishing second and fourth respectively at NESCAC Championships. The pair also sealed top-10 performances at Regionals to earn individual bids to Nationals, where O'Brien took 16th and Beck checked in at 21st, both good for All-American recognition.

O'Brien and Beck were also among those named to the NESCAC All-Academic team along with teammates senior Anna Shih and juniors Susan Allegretti, tri-captain Betsy Aronson, and Elyse Rosenberg. Additionally, Beck was named to the first-ever NESCAC All-Sportsmanship team.

Men's Soccer

For the third consecutive year, senior tri-captain Greg O'Connell found his way onto the All-NESCAC men's soccer slate. This time, however, it was as a first-teamer, the first such selection of his career. He earned the distinction by starting in all 14 games for the Jumbos and leading the team in goals (five), points (11) and shots (34).

Fellow tri-captain Alex Bedig had a celebrated season as well, serving as the anchor of a Jumbo defense that finished fourth in the NESCAC with a 1.21 goals-against average. Bedig was named to the league's Second Team for his efforts, becoming Tufts' first all-conference defenseman in six years.

Senior midfielder Bob Kastoff was twice rewarded for his contributions off the field, garnering both All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship honors.

Field Hockey

Senior co-captain Ileana Casellas-Katz was one of two Tufts players elected to the First Team after setting single-season program records in both points and goals. Joining her on the top squad is junior Brittany Holiday, who was second on the team with 18 points. Sophomore midfielder Margi Scholtes, who was third in the league with 11 assists, was the Jumbos' lone Second Team representative.

Casellas-Katz and classmate Corey Green were All-Academic selections, along with juniors Dana Svendsen and Marlee Kutcher. Svendsen was also selected to the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship team.
