Most of the men's track and field team came back from winter break early, on Tuesday, Jan. 8, to prepare for its second-semester schedule, which was supposed to kick off with the Dartmouth Relays this weekend. But the Jumbos decided to skip the meet and instead divided up for an intrasquad meet on Saturday, an exercise designed to see where the team stands as it gears up for the meat of its season.
"It gave us the ability to see where we're at in a low-pressure situation; we could all decide what we wanted to race in without any pressure," senior quad-captain Dave Sorensen said. "The teams were put together really well, and we scored the meet and it was very close. It made for an exciting last few events."
The meet also featured coaches and alumni, some of whom the older members of the team recognized.
"It was definitely fun because most of the people that came were young," Sorensen said. "I had a chance to run with several guys that I knew. A lot of them were still in shape, so it was fun to have a competition with alumni, while still being competitive."
The team now looks toward the Tufts Invitational next weekend, the first home meet of the year.
"It's the first real meet, and we always get some good competition. It'll be a good early season indicator of where we are. It's the first competition to see how we're shaping up as a team and where we need to go from here to get where we want to the rest of the season."
