THE SENIOR CLASS, MEN'S BASKETBALL
The men's basketball team's senior class was triumphant Saturday afternoon against Williams, 93-68, getting the team its first NESCAC win of the season on Senior Day, the final home game of their career.
Consisting of guards Jeremy Black and Ryan O'Keefe and forwards Jake Weitzen, Pat Sullivan and Aaron Harris, along with the leadership of graduate tri-captain Ross Trethewey, the group combined for 46 of the Jumbos' 93 points in the victory over the Ephs. Weitzen, who is averaging 14.0 points per game, good for second on the team, led the way with 20 points on Saturday.
Three of the Jumbos' top four scorers this season are seniors, and with two games left to play, the class is striving to have ended each of their four seasons with a winning record. Tufts is currently 11-11 overall, with games at Bowdoin and Colby remaining.
Despite the basketball team's poor NESCAC record thus far this season, the senior class has had prior success in the conference, having never finished with a sub-.500 conference record until this year. As sophomores, Weitzen, O'Keefe and Black were three major contributors to Tufts' run to the national Sweet Sixteen in March 2006.
KENDALL SWETT, WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Senior diver Kendall Swett highlighted the Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday, twice defeating rival Doria Holbrook from MIT. Both Swett and Holbrook have won NCAA national diving championships, and the pair trains together daily at MIT.
The invitational was the third time these two have competed against each other this season. The pair met twice at MIT before last weekend, and in both instances, Swett won the 3-meter dive while Holbrook took the 1-meter.
Last weekend, however, things were finally different. Swett won the 3-meter dive handily, posting a 310.40 to Holbrook's 295.05, but also managed to defeat Holbrook in the 1-meter dive, trumping her opponent 284.65 to 282.90.
Swett's performance was just one of many strong showings she has posted since transferring to Tufts last year. She tops the NESCAC list for 1- and 3-meter dives on the season, and she set conference records in both events during her junior year. Swett also owns a NESCAC Championship meet record in the 1-meter dive, which she will get a chance to top in less than two weeks.
Last weekend marked the team's final chance to race competitively before the NESCACs on Feb. 22-24.
