Beyond its dorm-style residence options, Tufts offers houses for sophomores, juniors and seniors: Carpenter and Wilson Houses. Carpenter House, located behind Carmichael, contains 15 doubles, seven singles, one triple, a large common area and a kitchen. Just down the street, Wilson House, which faces Fletcher field and is located on the corner of Curtis Street and Chetwynd Road, contains 18 doubles, 11 singles, five triples, a lounge and a kitchen. Both houses are divided by gender, with the second floor all-female and the third floor all-male in Carpenter, and the east wing all-female and the west wing all-male in Wilson.

Residents of these houses choose them for their differences from the traditional dorm options. "I chose Wilson because it was a nice change from the dorms. It felt more like a house," Williams said. Though residents do benefit from the homey feel created by walls made of plaster, not cinder block, and carpeted floors, these features do have drawbacks. With thinner walls and creakier floors, the house can feel noisy, Williams said. Though not as social as the freshman dorms, Williams says she knows all her neighbors.
