Housing Lottery 2008 | Sophia Gordon

Located downhill, across from the Aidekman Arts Center, Sophia Gordon houses 126 singles. Sophia Gordon opened to Tufts students last year after Tufts trustee Bernard Gordon donated $10 million for its construction in honor of his wife, Sophia. The dormitory has been praised for its "green technology," since it was built to utilize 30 percent less water and energy than a standard dorm. Although many of duPont's fellow fourth-year classmates live in off-campus houses, he thinks his dorm is the best of its kind. "As far as on-campus housing, Sophia Gordon is far and away the best option," duPont said. "It's incredibly convenient, location-wise. And another plus: the bedrooms have bookshelves."

But the apartment-style living can sometimes cause social segregation amidst the floor. "This dorm has kind of a strange vibe; there's no real social cohesion within the dorm that I've ever noticed," duPont said. "I think people are more likely to be friends with the people in their apartments, as opposed to people on their floor." That doesn't mean that living in Sophia Gordon can't be fun, though. "I've been to a few great parties here," he said.
