Men's club fencing tops NYU in all three weapons

Men's club fencing tops NYU in all three weapons The men's club fencing team came up with a successful meet against the NYU Violets at home on Sunday, as all three weapons won their matches.

Instead of the traditional type of match, the men fenced a relay match, in which each weapon fences nine bouts until the cumulative touches reach 45. Both foil and epee won 45-35, while sabre topped its Violet opponents 45-37.

"All of men's foil fenced extremely well on Sunday's sweep of NYU," senior foil captain Dan Tovrov said in an e-mail to the Daily. "They have a prestigious team and we wanted to come out swinging right away. We swept NYU, beating them by a solid margin in all three weapons. Next time they come, they'll think a little differently about our team."

Tovrov, sophomore Dan Jamison, and freshman Eric Berg accrued a big lead early on in the foil match. The team then subbed freshman Matt Rosenfield in a later round and he was able to gain a lot of experience while maintaining the Jumbos' lead.

"It was an all-around good performance by the men," Jamison said. "We only really lost two bouts for foil."

Sabre and epee posted strong showings of their own against NYU.

"As a whole, the men's teams fenced very well," sophomore sabre James Gilchrist said. "The performance at this match shows great potential going into the next part of the season and the end-of-season tournaments."

The team now has its sights set on the remainder of the season and hopes to rack up more successful matches against schools of NYU's caliber.

"Everyone was very happy about their performance today, and we hope to continue these results through the end of our season," sophomore foilist Sam McCauley said.
