After fight with girlfriend, logical move is stealing drain pipes and peeping at students

Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) officers responded on Jan. 31 to a report that a suspicious individual between Professor's Row and Ballou Hall was peering into windows. TUPD found the person on the steps leading down to Professor's Row. Upon questioning, he said he was out for a walk after a fight with his girlfriend. He was a Somerville resident who had been cited previously for trespassing on campus. They also found in his possession a switchblade knife, some hypodermic needles and a copper bracket used to hold drain pipes to a building.

An increase in the price of copper has made drain pipes and related equipment a hot item for thieves recently. The suspicious individual was arrested for trespassing and possession of a dangerous weapon, and the police later found brackets missing from drain pipes in campus buildings. They also found a large pile of copper pipes in the bushes outside Ballou. They added charges of receiving stolen property, larceny and malicious destruction of property.

For Boston sports fans, reaction to defeat proves no more civil than reaction to victory

The police received a report on the night of Feb. 3 that bottles were being thrown from the third floor of Miller Hall. Sergeant Robert McCarthy said that the individuals throwing the bottles "were obviously Patriots fans who weren't too happy about what happened," referring to the New England football team's Super Bowl loss that night.

When TUPD arrived at Miller, witnesses pointed to the window that the bottles had come from, and the officers went up and found three individuals in the room. The individuals denied throwing the containers, but in the trash can outside of the room there were several empty Heineken beer bottles that matched the ones thrown out the window. The police also noticed a bottle sticking out from under the comforter on the bed, and when they removed the comforter, they found a one-liter bottle of peach schnapps, a one-liter bottle of vodka and seven more full bottles of Heineken. All the beer bottles were still cold.

Two students in the room eventually took responsibility for throwing the bottles, and said that the third one wasn't involved. They then went and cleaned up the bottles outside.

Walk steady

TUPD officers stationed on Professor's Row last Saturday heard a loud crash on the far side of the tennis courts in front of Mugar Hall. When they investigated, they noticed someone walking away from the scene, a ripped window screen in Mugar and an overturned metal trash barrel. Upon confronting the individual, who was slurring his words, they learned that he was an undergraduate. He said he had nothing to do with the screen or the barrel.

After some questioning, the individual admitted to having had at least six beers. The police found a Zippo lighter and a marijuana joint in his pocket and two bottles of beer in his bag. He then said that he had overturned the trash barrel but did nothing to the screen. The marijuana and beer were confiscated.
