Ryan Molloy, Men's Lacrosse
Freshman attackman Ryan Molloy scored the first goal of his career 56 seconds into the men's lacrosse team's 10-6 victory over Trinity on Saturday. Then, he added three more.
All told, Molloy ended up with four goals and one assist in a breakout performance that helped the team end a three-game losing streak. Molloy and fellow freshman attackman D.J. Hessler - who is leading the team in points - combined to score five of the team's 10 goals against the Bantams.
While Hessler has been consistently excellent all season, Molloy's performance seemingly came out of nowhere, as he had fired just three total shots on the season heading into Saturday's game.
Just as impressive as the number of goals Molloy scored was the timing of them. His first tally, the first goal of the game, gave the team a much-needed confidence boost early in the game, while his second goal broke a 2-2 tie and began a run of four unanswered scores. Molloy's third and fourth goals came in the fourth quarter and helped to secure Tufts' win after Trinity had narrowed the Jumbos' lead to 7-5.
Tufts will take its potent offense into a matchup with No. 13 Western New England on Wednesday.
Julia Browne, Women's Tennis
The No. 12-ranked women's tennis team's 9-0 sweep of the unranked Colby Mules on Saturday was due in part to dominating performances from freshman Julia Browne, who did not surrender a single game in either of her two matches. Evidently, being thrown into the No. 1 spot did not deter her from performing at a top-notch level.
While playing first singles for the Jumbos, Browne took down Colby's No. 1, junior captain Nicole Veilleux, 6-0, 6-0. Browne then went on to win her No. 3 doubles match 8-0 against Colby's team of freshmen Tasha de Sherbinin and Katie Brezinski. Browne played with classmate Edwina Stewart, who also won her No. 6 singles match against Colby sophomore Hilana Bernheimer by another convincing score of 6-1, 6-0.
The win against Colby propelled the Jumbos to a 3-0 record in the NESCAC and 6-3 overall record, while dropping the Mules to 0-2 in the NESCAC and 3-5 overall.
Yesterday afternoon, Browne followed that effort with a three-set victory over Bates' Cecilia Grissa and again teamed with Stewart in a victory at third doubles.
Browne and the Jumbos' next match will be against unranked Brandeis on April 5.
