Clinton takes 'must-win' primaries in Ohio and Texas

Barack Obama's 11-state winning streak is over, and Hillary Clinton's campaign is still alive.

Sen. Clinton (D-N.Y.) won last night's Democratic primaries in delegate-rich Ohio and Texas, states her advisers had called must-wins if she were to keep campaigning through next month's Pennsylvania primary. "Ohio and Texas in particular were Sen. Clinton's self-proclaimed firewalls," Professor of Political Science Richard Eichenberg said.

Clinton can now say she has put a damper on the momentum of Sen. Obama (D-Ill.). "You know what they say: as Ohio goes, so goes the nation," she declared to supporters in the Buckeye State last night. "Well, this nation's coming back, and so is this campaign."

Clinton also won the Rhode Island primary, while Obama took Vermont. At press time, the Texas caucus - which counts for one third of the state's delegates other than superdelegates - was too close to call.
