VOX to screen film promoting open discussion about abortions

A day after Dr. James Sherley presented Tufts with a scientific and ethical argument for the illegalization of abortions, Voices for Choice (VOX), the university's reproductive rights group, will screen a short film dedicated to helping women who have abortions by promoting dialogue.

In "The Abortion Diaries," which VOX will show at 8 p.m. tonight in Olin Hall, director Penny Lane brings together a group of women who had abortions.

Lane and the rest of the women say they felt deserted and alone when they became pregnant. Lane makes the case that if women could openly discuss the topic of abortions, they would have an easier time dealing with the process.

Lane wants to remove what she believes is an unfair stigma associated with abortions. VOX Vice President and Secretary Alyssa Ursillo said that this is in line with the focus of this year's International Women's Week, which is currently underway.

"The theme for International Women's Week is women's voices ... so we thought that this fit well into that," said Ursillo, a sophomore.

Ursillo does not anticipate a particularly large crowd tonight, but she says the small setting will promote discussion.

"We think it's going to be a pretty intimate crowd because there's a lot going on this week, but we kind of want it to be an intimate setting and discussion," she said.
