Athletes of the Week

Chase Rose, Baseball

Freshman outfielder Chase Rose helped the baseball team take two of three from Colby this weekend to clinch second place in the NESCAC East and a spot in the conference tournament.

Rose went 6 for 11 over the weekend, scoring seven runs and knocking in five. His hits were certainly timely, as they included a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh that brought the Jumbos within one run of the Mules, as well as a two-run double in the second game of the doubleheader. Rose also exhibited excellent plate discipline, drawing five walks against zero strikeouts.

Rose has been a big part of the Tufts offense this season, regularly hitting fifth in the order behind senior Steve Ragonese and sophomore Corey Pontes. Rose trails only those two with his 29 RBI, and is second only to Ragonese with his .427 batting average. His 26 walks are tied for the team lead, while his .573 slugging percentage is second.

Logan Crane, Women's Track and Field

Sophomore Logan Crane of the women's track and field team helped lead Tufts to a runner-up finish at the NESCAC Championships at Hamilton College on Saturday.

Crane was at the head of an impressive performance for the Jumbos, who finished well behind Williams 160.5 points but were just ahead of third-place Middlebury by half a point. The sophomore continued to be a dual threat for Tufts by winning two events and adding a second-place finish as well.

Crane led a one-two finish at the top for Tufts in the long jump. Her 17'5" jump was her best jump of the spring and was ahead of senior teammate Jenna Weir, who gave Tufts a second place with a jump of 16 feet, 11 inches.

But it was in the sprinting events in which Crane shined. She ran the fastest time in the conference in the 100-meter dash (12.32) and followed up that performance by coming in second in the 200 in 25.52, once again in her best spring showing. Crane's two victories were the lone conference titles for Tufts in a very competitive atmosphere.

The Jumbos will continue their postseason slate Thursday at the New England Div. III Championships.
