Baseball continues offensive explosion, torches Mass. Maritime for 22 runs

Four days after scoring 26 runs against NESCAC East rival Bates, the baseball team was at it again yesterday, romping over out-of-conference foe Mass. Maritime 22-4 in Buzzards Bay, Mass.

Only five different Jumbos recorded hits on the day, but it was more than enough. The top third of the lineup - freshman left fielder Ian Goldberg, junior co-captain Kevin Casey and senior second baseman Steve Ragonese - was virtually unstoppable, combining to go 10-for-12 with 12 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Entering the game batting a team-high .508, Ragonese continued his torrid start to the season, going 4-for-4 with a home run and eight RBI to lead the way.

Carrying a 5-3 lead into the fourth inning, the Jumbo offense exploded for a whopping 17 unanswered runs to put the game out of reach. Mass. Maritime didn't help its own cause, walking 15 batters and committing seven errors on the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the pitching quartet of sophomore David Gibbs, senior co-captain Adam Telian, junior Mike Stefaniak and freshman Jack Dilday held the Bucs at bay. The group scattered nine hits over a combined seven innings of work while recording five strikeouts. Telian picked up the victory, tossing four shutout innings.

Tufts and Mass. Maritime were supposed to square off Tuesday, but rain pushed the game back to yesterday. The makeup allowed the Jumbos to continue their recent dominance over the Bucs, a squad that hasn't beaten Tufts since Apr. 20, 2000. Including this season's 18-run shellacking, the Jumbos have outscored Mass. Maritime 130-24 in their last eight meetings.

Tufts has a busy weekend ahead, hosting a doubleheader this afternoon against Albertus Magnus before traveling to Williams for a pair of games on Sunday.
