What's Cookin'?
Tufts University Police Dep-artment (TUPD) officers and the Somerville Fire Department responded at 12:40 p.m. on Sept. 17 to a fire alarm from Latin Way. The alarm was caused by smoke from cooking, but when investigating the area, officers noticed a plastic bag covering a smoke detector in one of the rooms.
They also observed several empty alcohol bottles – although all the residents of the suite were underage – and a red and orange glass pipe. The pipe, which smelled like marijuana, was confiscated.
A keg? In the basement? Naw!
Officers responded to another fire alarm at 2:40 p.m. on Sept. 18, this one at the Delta Upsilon fraternity house at 98 Professors Row. "We did not find the cause of the alarm, but we did find a keg in the basement," TUPD Sgt. Robert McCarthy said.
The residents "appeared to be dumbfounded" when they were informed of the keg's discovery, McCarthy said. TUPD confiscated the keg.
Hit me with your best shot — officer
Officers received a call at 3:01 a.m. on Sept. 19 reporting a disturbance at the Theta Delta Chi fraternity house at 123 Packard Ave. When they arrived on the scene, they saw five males in the courtyard arguing. One of the males, a student who was not a fraternity brother, accused the officers of harassing him for no good reason.
The student, who seemed to be under the influence of alcohol, continued to argue with the officers and challenged them to "lock him up." According to McCarthy, the student said that "he didn't have a curfew and he didn't have to go home if he didn't want to."
The individual walked toward the officers with his hands out, continuing to tell them to arrest him. He also refused to show identification and said he was going to get one of the officers fired. Eventually, his friends took him home.
Student arrested by Somerville police
TUPD and the Somerville Police Department dispatched officers to a loud party at 763 Broadway at 12:42 a.m. on Sept. 20. When they arrived, they found at least 200 people in the house, as well as two or three kegs and a beer pong table.
Officers asked for the residents, and one student said that he lived there. He refused to provide identification, questioning why he needed it. The student became loud and refused to cooperate, even though he was told many times to lower his voice and show his ID, according to McCarthy.
Somerville officers arrested the student for disorderly conduct and transported him to the Somerville Police Department for booking.
