"Engineering as a State Standard: Successes and Difficulties of Pre-College Engineering"

Details: Jacob Foster, director of science and technology/engineering education for the Massachusetts Department of Education, will speak about extending partnerships between universities and other institutions dedicated to student learning. This lecture is part of the Center for Engineering Educational Outreach's (CEEO) seminar series.

Details: Dan Harris, a senior scientist at the Naval Air Systems Command, will give a lecture entitled "Ralph David Keeling and the Measurement of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide."

"Leontief Prize Award Ceremony and Addresses"

Details: Award recipients Robert Wade, a professor of political economy and development at the London School of Economics, and José Antonio Ocampo, a professor of professional practice in international and public affairs at Columbia University, will lecture on "Beyond the Washington Consensus: New Visions for Trade and Development." A reception will follow the ceremony and speeches.

"Erin Brockovich Speaks at Tufts"

Details: Erin Brockovich will speak about environmental health, sharing her experiences as an unemployed, single mother in California who became a legal assistant and successfully prosecuted the power company that was polluting her city's water.

"PJS Post-election Lunch Discussion"

Details: The Peace and Justice Studies Program will host a post-election brown-bag lunch focusing on the theme "Obama: Redistributer-in-Chief?" The discussion will analyze the president-elect's trade and development, military and domestic agendas. Cambridge Peace Commission Executive Director Brian Corr, Assistant Sociology Professor Sarah Sobieraj and Global Development and Environment Institute Deputy Director Tim Wise will speak.

"The Traditional Arab City and Urban Modernization in the 19th and 20th Centuries"

Details: André Raymond, professor emeritus at the Université de Provence, will speak on Arab cities and urban modernization in the 1800s and 1900s. The lecture is part of the Fares Center's Fall 2008 Lecture Series.

"The New American Majority: Los Angeles and the Rise of the Multiethnic Community"

Details: Scott Kurashige, an associate professor of history at the University of Michigan, will argue that Los Angeles is a city whose ethnic transformation from a "white city" into a "world city" has prompted politicians to reevaluate the shifting roles of ethnicities and culture in America.
